3. HOW TO SURVEY?
•Survey means you look at your text.
•Do not read the text. (You are just
scanning the exciting text features!)
•Look at the Title, Author, Heading and
Subheadings.
•Look at the images.
•Scan for vocabulary.
5. QUESTION
•Look at the headings. Turn these
headings into questions.
•Ask yourself: “What do I already
know about this?”
•Create your OWN questions about the
text. (Ask what,Ask who, Ask why)
•If there are questions you need to
answer-- READ THEM!
7. READ
• Look for answers to questions
• Talk/ Discuss
• Write in margins
• Highlight
• Read each section carefully and answer
the heading questions you created.
•Reread any passages you need to clarify.
8. WHY READ?
• To gain information and learn!
• It’s fun!
• To prepare for class discussion
• To prepare for tests (like the HSA)
9. RECITE
•Put it in your own words
•Write a summary
•Write notes (in book or on
paper)
•Create 3X5 cards
