Lesson 12 ppt
1. Welcome Back!
You will see a map of the world and a piece of sugar
paper
Stick the map in the middle of the sugar paper and as
a table you must annotate the map with as much
information about immigration as you know
Think about the following:
on who came during war, after war, numbers,
reasons why, Windrush – reasons why(push and pull)
2. You have a Mock exam in 2
weeks!
O The Academy have said that all year 10 AHSL
students will have a mock exam over the next
couple of weeks.
O Don’t worry about it – it will help us all learn
how to tackle this type of exam paper (source
paper)
O Today we will have a look at the hardest
question on the paper which is the 12 mark
question.
3. Structure to follow.
Balanced answer – which sources support the statement and which don’t –
give proof from sources (Quotes)
link this in with own knowledge when you evaluate what the source is trying to
say
eg the source suggests women did…which is referring to when women…
Analyse Sources - whether the sources are accurate/reliable representation
of the period by using own knowledge and also look at purpose, date and
authors of sources
Conclusion - Final 2 marks go to – overall do more of the sources support
statement or disagree with statement?
Remember the question is asking how far do the sources support the
statement NOT is the statement correct, use sources to support your answer!

5. The Notting Hill Riots: the
Summer of Violence
O You need to find out what happened
in Notting Hill and Nottingham in
1958
O Create a news story about the
incident which you will perform to the
class – think about the time it was
aired and who would the blame be
placed on?
6. How was the incident
portrayed in the media and
viewed by the public?
O Look at the two cartoons on page 458
O Can you remember how to analyse a
cartoon?
O We cant forget because it will be on the
exam in a couple of weeks!
O Can you create your own political cartoon
about the incident in 1958?
Its not about the quality of your drawing, its about
Who you place blame on based on the artist eg
newspaper, the date is important, how creative you
can be in being ironic or straight forward, showing
blame
7. What do you think is
happening in this picture?
8. The experiences of some
Immigrants in Britain
Many of the Early Jamaican Immigrants
remember being welcomed. One Jamaican
nurse remembers that bus conductors
would often waive the fare for her and fellow
nurses!Father came to Britain and the soon after I came with my mother. In
London she worked for the first time in her life outside our home, in the
sewing workshop with a Jewish refugee from Germany and an Irish
woman. The other workers there were among her closest friends all the
time she was in England. I used to listen to her talking with a feeling of
surprise. Never, in my experience, had she talked so much. She laughed
a lot too. I’d probably never seen her so happy as in those times when
her life was changing so much.
A West Indian writing in 1999 about her mother’s experiences in
Britain in the 1950s and 60s
UNFORTUNATLEY …….
This was more of an exception to the rule than the norm!
As you maybe could of guessed from the Nottinghill Riots 1958!
9. How were Immigrants treated?
O You job is to find out how immigrants were
treated in the following areas:
O Housing
O Work
O Work Social life
O With this information you will be creating an
advert for people living in commonwealth
countries, advertising what they can expect
when and if they come to Britain.
O Find the information needed from page 457-8
10. Exam Preparation
O You will be given an exam style question
in groups and you need to create the
model plan and answer for it and you will
teach the class how to do this so they are
prepared for the exam next week.
14. What did the Government do
to sort the Immigration
Issues?
O We need to learn the timeline of information regarding
what the government did regarding Immigration on
page 462
O I will split you into groups and you will need to come
up with a fun and creative way to teach the rest of the
class what happened during this time – it is up to you
how go about this but you need to make sure the rest
of the class will learn information from your activity.
O I will also come up with an activity and we will have a
go at all of the activities.
