Psychosocial Hazards “Psychosocial hazards are defined by the International Labour Organisation (ILO, 1986) in terms of the interactions among job content, work organisation and management, and their environmental and organisational conditions, on the one hand, and the employees’ competencies and needs on the other.” (Leka, S. & Jain, A., 2010) 2

9. What is Bullying? “Bullying is repeated unreasonable behaviour directed towards a worker or group of workers that create a risk to health and safety.” (ACT Work Safety Commissioner, 2010) 9
10. What is Bullying? Worksafe ACT identifies bullying as behaviour that meets the following criteria: if behaviour is repeated if behaviour occurs between workers of an organisation if behaviour is unwelcome and unsolicited if a reasonable person would consider the behaviour to be offensive, intimidating, humiliating or threatening If behaviour has the potential to cause harm to those experiencing the behaviour 10
11. What is not bullying? Reasonable actions carried out in a fair and just way is not bullying. For example: Setting performance goals, standards and deadlines Transferring a worker Constructive feedback Performance management processes Implementing organisational or systematic changes 11

Types of Bullying Indirect work bullying Unjustified criticism or complaints; Deliberately excluding someone from workplace activities; or Deliberately denying access to information or other resources. Direct work bullying Verbal abuse; Putting someone down and humiliating a person through gestures, sarcasm, criticism, teasing and insults, often in front of others; or Spreading rumours or innuendo about someone. 12 Source: Commissioner for Public Administration: ACT Government. Types of Bullying Upwards:a manager/team leader is being bullied by someone they require to manage Disruptive Hold Information Downwards: a manager/team leader bullies someone in their team or who they manage Belittle team member Give work below level of expertise Isolate a team member Performance management out Sidewards: bullying amongst people who work at the same level Mobbing 13
14. Types of Bullying Intended: Where actions were intended to humiliate, offend, intimidate or distress, whether or not the behaviour did in fact have effect. ACT Work Safety Act The Work Safety Act 2008 requires a person conducting a business or undertaking and/or a person in control of premises to identity hazards, assess risks and eliminate or control risks to the health and safety of workers. A person conducting a business or undertaking and/or person in control of premises must consult workers and take all reasonably practicable steps to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of workers. 16 Source: ACT Work Safety Commissioner.
