2. Aim:
• To explore the positive effects a balanced diet
can have on an individual
• To explore the negative effects a unbalanced
diet can have on an individual
• Task: Compare these effects using case studies.
3. Influences on Lifestyle
• There are a wide variety of factors which can
influence our lifestyle, in either positive or
negative ways.
• For example influences such as keeping fit,
good self image and a balanced diet would
have a positive effect on our lifestyle.
• However, influences such as smoking, drinking
and having low self esteem would have a
negative effect on lifestyle.
4. Positive effects of a balanced diet
A healthy balanced diet = foods
from all food groups in the
correct proportions
The benefits of a balanced diet are:
• You are getting the correct amounts of nutrients you body
needs in order to be healthy
•You are less likely to suffer from deficiency diseases,
obesity and being underweight, all of which would have a
negative effect on your lifestyle.
5. Positive effects of a balanced diet
People who eat a healthy, balanced diet are less likely to
experience:
*Obesity
*Heart disease
*Type 2 diabetes
There are many benefits of having a balanced diet. It can
often lead to being healthy in other aspects of your life
such as exercise and sleep patterns.
6. Positive effects of a balanced diet
Image and Social Awareness
• Eating healthy can lead to people having a healthy
concept of their body image. This can result in them to
be more driven to keep fit and eat healthily
• Eating a balanced diet can link in with people having
higher self esteem. Therefore, they tend to be happier
and more secure which has a positive effect on their
lifestyle
7. Negative effects of an unbalanced diet
Drinking
An unhealthy and unbalanced diet may lead to
excessive drinking which can increase the
chances of mental health problems and more
risk of injury.
8. Negative effects of an unbalanced diet
Medical problems e.g. obesity, eating disorders
(anorexia, bulimia)
People who are obese have higher incidence of illnesses
such as:
• Diabetes / Heart disease / Hypertension / Gallstones /
Mental illnesses such as depression
People who suffer from eating disorders have higher
incidence of:
• Mental health problems / Heart problems like
Arrhythmia / Anaemia / Malnutrition / Infertility
9. Negative effects of an unbalanced diet
Lower self esteem:
Higher risk of mental illnesses such as depression
and anxiety due to poor body image
Low self esteem and self worth due to body image
and diet.
