against the Federalist Party
Democrats felt that the government
(SHOULD NOT) make religious or moral
legislation
Republicans felt that the government
(SHOULD) interfere with morality issues
They supported states’ rights and the
literal and strict interpretation of the
Constitution
They strove to prevent the US
government from becoming too similar
to a monarchy
Over the next century, the Democratic
and Republican parties began to
materialize into the two-party system
