This film pitch proposes a teen romance movie about a popular high school girl who breaks up with her boyfriend, one of the most popular boys in school. She turns to her geeky best friend for advice and comfort. Through flashbacks, it is revealed that the geeky friend has always had feelings for the girl but thought she wasn't his type. The girl comes to realize that personality is more important than looks, and she starts falling for her geeky friend. The film's message is that looks aren't everything and deeper qualities like personality are what really matter in a relationship. Inspiration is drawn from TV shows like 90210 and films like Geek Charming that follow a similar storyline.
2. WHAT GENRE IS IT? TARGET
AUDIENCE?
Romance. Not as cliché as most romance films however still
contains some of the well known parts of a romance.
Target audience would be teen/ young adult.
3. WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
The film will start with a girl being upset about breaking up with her
boyfriend- one of the most popular boys in school. Due to this she turns to
her boy best-friend for advice, he is not popular or attractive and is actually
seen to be very geeky. The only thing he gets credit for is being best-friends
with such a popular girl in school. He has always liked her but has never told
her because he thinks he is not her ‘type’. The young girl realises that looks
aren’t as important as personality and starts falling for the geeky friend.
There will be flashbacks of the geeky friend out with his friends when she’s
near and we will see him constantly looking at her and wanting a chance to
be with her showing that he genuinely really likes her. This will then coincide
with flashbacks of the girl and her ‘popular’ ex-boyfriend together at parties
etc constantly arguing, showing that they were only together due to
popularity.
4. DISTINCT
Setting- The film will be set in a school and also have scenes from café’s
etc in London, where the geeky boy will be admiring the girl across the
room. It will also need to include scenes of the boyfriend and girlfriend at a
party so this could be set in a room in someone’s house.
It will be set in modern day so we know how make it believable and how to
make people empathise with the storyline.
Themes- the themes will include high key lighting to portray a happy
atmosphere when the girl and friend begin to get together.
Characters- the film will mainly include the popular girl and boy and then
the geeky friend and a few other school classmates etc in particular scenes.
5. FILMS MESSAGE
The films message will be that looks aren’t everything. The girl goes
for a popular good looking boy in school and it ends horribly.
However she then realises she is falling for a geeky boy who has a
good personality. They are already best-friends so obviously get
along well before they get together.
6. MUSIC/ CAMERA
For this opening we would need to include various shots to make the
film successful. Such as a long shot, a match on action, low, level and
high shots (birdseye and wormseye)
I think for this genre we need parallel music and also non diegetic
sounds to make the opening effective. A voiceover could also work
for this specific genre.
7. VISUAL MOODBOARD
Even though 90210 isn’t a film this is a very good example
of inspiration I have got for this story line. Naomi is going
out with a popular football player then later on realises
she likes the maths and science geek.
8. …
Geek Charming is also a similar film along
the same story lines. Even though this is a
Disney film it still shows the message that
there is more to people than just looks.
9. INSTITUTIONS
Both of the film companies above have produced
quite a few romance films. New Line Cinema
produced ‘The Notebook’. Its estimated budget
was $29,000,000. This means it was planned to
be quite a successful film. It was released in
2004 and has done very well since.
