Medical waste-disposal-management-in-the-medical-institutions
1. Medical waste disposal management in the
medical institutions
(Hospitals and medical centers)
Al-Waffa Center for Diabetes and Endocrine
This presentation was prepared by
Mohanad Sehree
2. Outlines of subject
• Definition of Medical waste
• What are the medical waste types
• Types of medical waste and how can be
disposed
• Pie chart details reported by WHO
• Who are in touch with Medical waste
• Conclusion
3. Medical Waste
These are infectious waste materials generated
at health care facilities, such as hospitals, clinics
physician’s offices, dental centres, blood banks,
and veterinary hospitals/clinics, as well as
medical research facilities and laboratories.
4. Types of medical waste
• General medical waste
These kind of stuff are not
typically considered hazardous
such as paper, plastic, cans and
office waste. These can be
disposed easily without any
special handling. These
materials are basically placed in
black bags (disposed of as
normal household waste).
5. • Infectious Medical Waste
blood-soaked bandages, sharps for example
needles and lancets waste, surgical waste,
Human body parts and fluids, cultures and
swabs tools, these materials are infectious and
harmful to human.
6. • Its absolutely critical to dispose these kind of stuff in
the special bags ( Yellow bags and containers)
7. • Disposing body fluids for instance CSF, urine
blood, plasma and any body fluid secretion
are placed in the clean up yellow box to go
later incineration process
Kit used to keep body fluid inCombustion stage
8. Pharmaceutical waste
• It is important that all medicines
(solid and liquid contaminated and
expired) are safely disposed in the
separated containers (never place
solid and liquid medicines in the
same container) to be delivered
later to the incineration area. The
idea of solid and liquid medicines
segregation is to prevent any
accident may occur, e.g. chemical
reactions, emitting toxic gases or
fires.
9. • Hazardous Medical Waste
it is an harmful waste but not considered
infectious to individuals, for instance
Chemotherapy agents, and chemicals solvents.
10. • Radioactive Medical Waste:
such as radioactive therapies materials
which are used for tests such as thallium
stress tests and also nuclear medicine
therapies to treat some kind of cancers.
Nuclear medicine provides some diagnostic
information about the function of human
organs
11. • The pie chart below was reported WHO illustrates
some details about the percents of medical waste
basically disposed by the hospitals.
12. Who are in touch with medical waste
• Doctors and Nurses
• Laboratories Technologists
• Blood Bank Technologists
• Dentists and Dental
workers
• Housekeeping individuals
• People who work in
Environment and public
health field
13. Conclusion
• The biomedical waste disposal program can not be
successfully implemented without willingness, self-
motivation, and cooperation.
• Health care is the responsibility of all individuals
who work daily in this building, so it is highly
recommended to go hand with hand to control on
this issue by constantly watching all kind of bags to
get clean environment and reduce the accidents
which may occur for someone in the future.
• Cleaners should hold the waste bags from the top
(Never hug the bags for any kid of reason)
