Airport Carbon Footprint
 It’s the measurement to identify carbon emission to assign a strategy framework to manage the carbon
emission reduction from the operation of an Airport.
 Definitions of emissions footprints used by Airport Carbon Accreditation follow the principles of the
World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the World Resources Institute (WRI)
“Greenhouse Gas Protocol” Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard.
Airport Carbon Accreditation
 Framework and tool for active carbon management with measurable results
 It covers the operational activities that contribute most to carbon emissions.
 It is site specific and can be used at airport as part of its daily environmental management activity and
long term strategy as it helps to guide and support airport environmental management
Carbon Footprint Accreditation Authority
 Airport Carbon Accreditation is overseen by an independent Advisory Board (ACI EUROPE).
 It’s management structure owned by ACI EUROPE
 An independent administrator (WSP Environment & Energy) who manages the application process and
gives form accreditation approval.
Steps involved in Carbon Accreditation Process
i) Mapping: Initial carbon footprint measurement
ii) Reduction: Carbon management to reduce the carbon emission
iii) Optimization: Third party involvement in airport’s auxiliary operation (e. g. independent ground
handlers, catering companies, air traffic control and others working on the airport site) to efficiency
improvement
iv) Neutrality: Direct carbon emission offsetting to acquire neutrality
Necessasity of Carbon Accreditation
 Global recognition for an Airport as eco friendly operation& management
 Environment friendly energy use in airport buildings and infrastructure as well as transport to and from
airports, airside vehicles, aircraft ground movements, and refrigerants
 Cutting carbon emissions from airport operations will result in a significant overall reduction in carbon
emissions
 Airport Carbon Accreditation permits the use of the following internationally recognized offset instruments
like: Certified Emission Reductions (CER), Emissions Reduction Units (ERU), Proprietary Verified Emission
Reductions (VER), European Union Allowance (EUA)
How to Achieve the Carbon Accreditation
 Reducing carbon footprint: use of renewable energy, low carbon technologies
 Conducting energy audit to identify scope of energy efficiency improvement
 Identifying non-technical solutions to reduce carbon footprint
 Be able to identify the most suitable method of carbon footprint reduction for airport

How to Achieve Carbon Footprint Accreditation for Bangladeshi Airports
 Carbon footprints calculation of an Airport should be independently verified in accordance with ISO14064
(Greenhouse Gas Accounting).
 Evidence of this must be provided to the administrator together with all claims regarding carbon
management processes which must also be independently verified.
 When considering the emissions from aircraft within the airport perimeter and on final approach and
initial departure, must meet the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) definition of the
Landing-Take Off cycle and requires airports to comply with these definitions.
 Use of renewable energy, low carbon technologiesin airport buildings and infrastructure as well as transport
to and from airports, airside vehicles, aircraft ground movements, and refrigerants.
Process Involved in Achieving Level of Accreditation for Bangladeshi Airport
Level Process
Mapping
 Step-1: At first the airport have to determination its ‘operational boundary’ and the
emissions sources within that boundary which are Scope 1 and Scope 2 sources, as defined
by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol
 Step-2: Then airport have to collect data and calculate its annual carbon emissions for the
previous year for those sources
 Step-3: After collecting data airport have to compile a carbon footprint report in a
prescribed form
 Step-4: Then airport have to engage an independent third party to verify the report before
submission to the accreditation body (WSP Environment & Energy: who manages the
application process and gives form accreditation approval) to ensure that the carbon
footprint calculation is in accordance with ISO14064 and accreditation requirements
 Step-5: After necessary assessment & evaluation approval committee will give the
accreditation of the ‘Mapping’ level
Reduction
 Step-1: Fulfill all the requirements of ‘Mapping’
 Step-2: Provide evidence of effective carbon management procedures including:
 low carbon/low energy policy
 Monitor consumption of fuel and energy
 Set carbon/energy reduction targets
 Programs or control mechanisms to ensure operations minimize emissions
 Undertaking awareness training about emissions for staff
 Process of self assessment & auditing to monitor progress of improvement
delivery
 Step-3: Show that a reduction in the carbon footprint has occurred by analyzing the
carbon emissions data of consecutive years.
 Step-4: Then apply for the promotion to upper level; after necessary assessment &
evaluation approval committee will give the accreditation of the ‘Neutrality’ level.
Level Process
Optimization
 Step-1: Fulfill all the requirements of ‘Mapping’ and ‘Reduction’
 Step-2: Widen the scope of its carbon footprint to include a range of Scope 3 emissions.
(GHG Protocol)
Scope 3 emissions to be measured include:
 landing and take-off cycle emissions
 surface access to the airport for passengers and staff
 staff business travel emissions
 Any other Scope 3 emissions which the airport chooses to include.
Stakeholder Engagement for Level 3 of an airport should ensure:
 Identification and categorization of stakeholders in the airport with guidance
and those it can influence.
 Allocation of clear roles and responsibilities for engaging and facilitating
partnerships with key stakeholders (airlines, ground handlers, etc).
 Details of communications and training provided to stakeholders.
 A clear implementation plan of the intended approach to engaging with
stakeholders including proposed actions and timings.
 Step-3: Presentation of evidence of engagement with third party operators to reduce
wider airport-based carbon emissions
 Step-4: Then apply for the promotion to upper level; after necessary assessment &
evaluation approval committee will give the accreditation of the ‘Optimization’ level
Neutrality
 Step-1: Fulfill all requirements of ‘Mapping’, ‘Reduction’ and ‘Optimization’
 Step-2: Offset its remaining Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions (GHG Protocol) to show its
commitment to achieving carbon neutral operations for all direct emissions and indirect
emissions over which the airport has control, using internationally recognized offsets.
 Step-3: Then apply for the promotion to upper level; after necessary assessment &
evaluation approval committee will give the accreditation of the ‘Neutrality’ level
Scope of Work for FCL
 Engagement in Carbon Footprints Assessment and Energy Auditoras independent verification body
 Consultation Service for better insulation and energy efficiency improvement in airport buildings and
infrastructure
 Involvement as Third Party/Stakeholder in airport’s auxiliary operation to efficiency improvement
 Green Audit for switching to green energy sources for airports overall operation and maintenance process
 Conduct Training & Encouragement Program for airport employees, passengers & visitors to use public
transport& 3R (Recycle, Reduce, Reuse)
 Working With Airlines & Air Traffic Management to reduce runway taxiing times
 Providing a Low-Carbon And Green Design Concept, reduce the use of raw materials, and Increase The
Use Of Low-Carbon Suppliers
 Support internal actions taken to reduce emissions through investigation of alternate air travel
configurations, alternative materials and processes and Identification Of Emissions Hotspots
 Cooperate the airport authority to implement green landing processes in the airport using appropriate
technology
 Working With Airport Planners And Third Parties to ensure that airport’s infrastructure plans reflect and
implement the airport’s carbon reduction goals
 Forming Strategic Partnerships with Key Airport Operators e.g. airlines or contractors to collaborate on
investment projects and opportunities.

Airport Carbon Footprint

  • 1. Airport Carbon Footprint  It’s the measurement to identify carbon emission to assign a strategy framework to manage the carbon emission reduction from the operation of an Airport.  Definitions of emissions footprints used by Airport Carbon Accreditation follow the principles of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the World Resources Institute (WRI) “Greenhouse Gas Protocol” Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard. Airport Carbon Accreditation  Framework and tool for active carbon management with measurable results  It covers the operational activities that contribute most to carbon emissions.  It is site specific and can be used at airport as part of its daily environmental management activity and long term strategy as it helps to guide and support airport environmental management Carbon Footprint Accreditation Authority  Airport Carbon Accreditation is overseen by an independent Advisory Board (ACI EUROPE).  It’s management structure owned by ACI EUROPE  An independent administrator (WSP Environment & Energy) who manages the application process and gives form accreditation approval. Steps involved in Carbon Accreditation Process i) Mapping: Initial carbon footprint measurement ii) Reduction: Carbon management to reduce the carbon emission iii) Optimization: Third party involvement in airport’s auxiliary operation (e. g. independent ground handlers, catering companies, air traffic control and others working on the airport site) to efficiency improvement iv) Neutrality: Direct carbon emission offsetting to acquire neutrality Necessasity of Carbon Accreditation  Global recognition for an Airport as eco friendly operation& management  Environment friendly energy use in airport buildings and infrastructure as well as transport to and from airports, airside vehicles, aircraft ground movements, and refrigerants  Cutting carbon emissions from airport operations will result in a significant overall reduction in carbon emissions  Airport Carbon Accreditation permits the use of the following internationally recognized offset instruments like: Certified Emission Reductions (CER), Emissions Reduction Units (ERU), Proprietary Verified Emission Reductions (VER), European Union Allowance (EUA)

  • 15. How to Achieve Carbon Footprint Accreditation for Bangladeshi Airports  Carbon footprints calculation of an Airport should be independently verified in accordance with ISO14064 (Greenhouse Gas Accounting).  Evidence of this must be provided to the administrator together with all claims regarding carbon management processes which must also be independently verified.  When considering the emissions from aircraft within the airport perimeter and on final approach and initial departure, must meet the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) definition of the Landing-Take Off cycle and requires airports to comply with these definitions.  Use of renewable energy, low carbon technologiesin airport buildings and infrastructure as well as transport to and from airports, airside vehicles, aircraft ground movements, and refrigerants. Process Involved in Achieving Level of Accreditation for Bangladeshi Airport Level Process Mapping  Step-1: At first the airport have to determination its ‘operational boundary’ and the emissions sources within that boundary which are Scope 1 and Scope 2 sources, as defined by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol  Step-2: Then airport have to collect data and calculate its annual carbon emissions for the previous year for those sources  Step-3: After collecting data airport have to compile a carbon footprint report in a prescribed form  Step-4: Then airport have to engage an independent third party to verify the report before submission to the accreditation body (WSP Environment & Energy: who manages the application process and gives form accreditation approval) to ensure that the carbon footprint calculation is in accordance with ISO14064 and accreditation requirements  Step-5: After necessary assessment & evaluation approval committee will give the accreditation of the ‘Mapping’ level Reduction  Step-1: Fulfill all the requirements of ‘Mapping’  Step-2: Provide evidence of effective carbon management procedures including:  low carbon/low energy policy  Monitor consumption of fuel and energy  Set carbon/energy reduction targets  Programs or control mechanisms to ensure operations minimize emissions  Undertaking awareness training about emissions for staff  Process of self assessment & auditing to monitor progress of improvement delivery  Step-3: Show that a reduction in the carbon footprint has occurred by analyzing the carbon emissions data of consecutive years.  Step-4: Then apply for the promotion to upper level; after necessary assessment & evaluation approval committee will give the accreditation of the ‘Neutrality’ level.
  • 16. Level Process Optimization  Step-1: Fulfill all the requirements of ‘Mapping’ and ‘Reduction’  Step-2: Widen the scope of its carbon footprint to include a range of Scope 3 emissions. (GHG Protocol) Scope 3 emissions to be measured include:  landing and take-off cycle emissions  surface access to the airport for passengers and staff  staff business travel emissions  Any other Scope 3 emissions which the airport chooses to include. Stakeholder Engagement for Level 3 of an airport should ensure:  Identification and categorization of stakeholders in the airport with guidance and those it can influence.  Allocation of clear roles and responsibilities for engaging and facilitating partnerships with key stakeholders (airlines, ground handlers, etc).  Details of communications and training provided to stakeholders.  A clear implementation plan of the intended approach to engaging with stakeholders including proposed actions and timings.  Step-3: Presentation of evidence of engagement with third party operators to reduce wider airport-based carbon emissions  Step-4: Then apply for the promotion to upper level; after necessary assessment & evaluation approval committee will give the accreditation of the ‘Optimization’ level Neutrality  Step-1: Fulfill all requirements of ‘Mapping’, ‘Reduction’ and ‘Optimization’  Step-2: Offset its remaining Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions (GHG Protocol) to show its commitment to achieving carbon neutral operations for all direct emissions and indirect emissions over which the airport has control, using internationally recognized offsets.  Step-3: Then apply for the promotion to upper level; after necessary assessment & evaluation approval committee will give the accreditation of the ‘Neutrality’ level Scope of Work for FCL  Engagement in Carbon Footprints Assessment and Energy Auditoras independent verification body  Consultation Service for better insulation and energy efficiency improvement in airport buildings and infrastructure  Involvement as Third Party/Stakeholder in airport’s auxiliary operation to efficiency improvement  Green Audit for switching to green energy sources for airports overall operation and maintenance process  Conduct Training & Encouragement Program for airport employees, passengers & visitors to use public transport& 3R (Recycle, Reduce, Reuse)  Working With Airlines & Air Traffic Management to reduce runway taxiing times  Providing a Low-Carbon And Green Design Concept, reduce the use of raw materials, and Increase The Use Of Low-Carbon Suppliers  Support internal actions taken to reduce emissions through investigation of alternate air travel configurations, alternative materials and processes and Identification Of Emissions Hotspots
  • 17.  Cooperate the airport authority to implement green landing processes in the airport using appropriate technology  Working With Airport Planners And Third Parties to ensure that airport’s infrastructure plans reflect and implement the airport’s carbon reduction goals  Forming Strategic Partnerships with Key Airport Operators e.g. airlines or contractors to collaborate on investment projects and opportunities.
