The major aim of
extension is to develop
the rural society through
a variety of extension
programmes.
 Rural sociology
The success of the
programmes depends
on rural population’s
support, co-operation
and participation in
these programmes

Hence, knowledge on rural sociology which structure, culture,
customs, laws, beliefs of the rural society is very important on
the part of the extension workers because these factors affect the
attitude, approach, behaviour etc. of the rural people.

Meaning of Extension Education:
• The word Extension is derived from the Latin roots ‘Ex’
meaning ‘out’ and ‘tensio’ meaning ‘stretching’.
• Education, which is stretched out into the villages and fields
beyond the limits of schools and colleges to which formal type
of education is normally confined.
•signifies an OUT OF SCHOOL system of education

INTERRELATIONSHIP BETWEEN RURAL SOCIOLOGY
AND EXTENSION

The Inter-relationship between Sociology and Agricultural
Extension
Rural sociology is the scientific study of rural man’s
behaviour in relationship to other groups and individuals with
whom he interacts. Agricultural extension is a non-formal
education for farmers (rural people) with a view to develop
rural society on desirable lines.
Rural sociology studies the attitude and behaviour of rural
people whereas agricultural extension seeks to modify or
change the attitude and behaviour of farmers.

Rural sociology studies the needs and interests of rural
society and agricultural extension helps farmers to
discover their needs and problems and build educational
programmes based on these needs and wants.
Rural sociology analyses rural social relationship or
group or organization and leaders in rural areas.
Agricultural extension utilizes the knowledge pertaining to
groups, organisations and leaders to achieve the objective
or agricultural development.

Rural sociology studies social situation s and collects
social facts of rural society. Agricultural extension makes
uses of such social data as basis for building up extension
programmes for farmers.
Rural sociology investigates the social, cultural,
political and religious problems of rural society.
Agricultural extension also studies these problems with
special reference to their impact on agricultural extension
work in the village.

  • 2.  Extension education The major aim of extension is to develop the rural society through a variety of extension programmes.  Rural sociology The success of the programmes depends on rural population’s support, co-operation and participation in these programmes 2 Hence, knowledge on rural sociology which structure, culture, customs, laws, beliefs of the rural society is very important on the part of the extension workers because these factors affect the attitude, approach, behaviour etc. of the rural people.
  • 3. 3 Meaning of Extension Education: • The word Extension is derived from the Latin roots ‘Ex’ meaning ‘out’ and ‘tensio’ meaning ‘stretching’. • Education, which is stretched out into the villages and fields beyond the limits of schools and colleges to which formal type of education is normally confined. •signifies an OUT OF SCHOOL system of education
  • 4. 4 INTERRELATIONSHIP BETWEEN RURAL SOCIOLOGY AND EXTENSION Sl.   • 6. 6 5 It studies social situations and assembles social facts or rural society It makes use of such social data as a basis for building up its extension programs for rural areas 6 It investigates the social, cultural, political, and religious problems of rural society It also studies these problems with reference to their impact on extension work in villages
  • 7. 7 The Inter-relationship between Sociology and Agricultural Extension Rural sociology is the scientific study of rural man’s behaviour in relationship to other groups and individuals with whom he interacts. Agricultural extension is a non-formal education for farmers (rural people) with a view to develop rural society on desirable lines. Rural sociology studies the attitude and behaviour of rural people whereas agricultural extension seeks to modify or change the attitude and behaviour of farmers.
  • 8. 8 Rural sociology studies the needs and interests of rural society and agricultural extension helps farmers to discover their needs and problems and build educational programmes based on these needs and wants. Rural sociology analyses rural social relationship or group or organization and leaders in rural areas. Agricultural extension utilizes the knowledge pertaining to groups, organisations and leaders to achieve the objective or agricultural development.
