  7. 7. Judging Criteria The Miss Sioux Empire Fair competition judging system is designed to promote diversity, individuality and overall achievement among all contestants. Judges score the individual contestants immediately following each phase of competition. Contestants are scored on a 1-10 point scale, in whole numbers, within each category (more than one contestant may receive the same score). Talent: Contestants perform a two-minute routine. Scoring is based on contestants’ skill and personality, interpretive ability, technical skill level, stage presence and the totality of all elements, including costume, props, voice, use of body and choreography. Interview: Each contestant participates in an individual 10-minute press conference-style interview with the panel of judges. Contestants are questioned on their background, educational and career goals, opinions on current events and social issues, and their interests, hobbies and extra-curricular activities. Scoring is based on communication skills including personality, intelligence, validated opinions, emotional control, first impression and personal appearance, and whether the contestant possesses the qualities and attributes of a Miss Sioux Empire Fair. Evening Wear: Contestants appear on stage in an outfit representative of what they would wear to a formal social event. Scoring is based on overall first impression, sense of confidence, personality, stage presence, walk, posture, appropriateness of attire and sense of attractiveness. Lifestyle & Fitness in Swimsuit: Contestants briefly appear on stage in a one or two piece swimsuit and footwear. Scoring is based on physical fitness and health, physique and proportion, walk, posture and grace, sense of confidence and presence on stage. On-stage Question: Each contestant will be asked a question while on stage. Scoring is based on ability to articulate her opinion, confidence and stage presence, ability to answer question in the time allotted and in context, and her potential as a spokesperson for the Miss South Dakota Organization and the Sioux Empire Fair. Breakdown of Judging: Talent 35% Interview 25% Evening Wear 20% Lifestyle & Fitness in Swimsuit 15% On-stage Question 5% Total 100%

  10. 10. Duties This Miss Sioux Empire Fair pageant is held every year the day before the fair week begins. The newly crowned Miss Sioux Empire Fair will have a golf cart with signs on it, a walkie-talkie and a schedule of hourly events to go to every day. Some of her duties will be handing out ribbons, greeting, judging contests, Ag Appreciation Day, performing and, of course, the Strongest Farmer Competition! She will have a host home for the week and the Sioux Empire Fair office will be directing her duties. She will see over 200,000 people come through these gates! Next June, Miss Sioux Empire Fair will travel to Hot Springs, SD to compete as a contestant in the Miss South Dakota 2011 pageant. During pageant week she will tour Hot Springs, visit nursing homes, and participate in a parade. Following two nights of preliminary competition, the finals of the pageant will be held and Miss South Dakota 2011 will be chosen.
  11. 11. The History of the Miss Sioux Empire Fair Program Sylvia and Mort Henkin started the first Miss Sioux Empire Fair Queen Contest in 1954 where Dorothy Ode from Brandon was the first queen. In 1956, Martha Sellen was crowned and received a $250 wardrobe and a plane trip to Minneapolis courtesy of John Morrell & Co. The Queen Show continued to produce entries and audiences beyond expectations. So many young ladies desired to participate that a pre-screening session was necessary in order to select the top entries for the evening contest! June Delbridge went on to become Miss SD 1964 and came back to give her crown up as Miss Sioux Empire Fair when there were 26 contestants in the 1965 Queen Show. That year one of the pageant regulations stated that no contestants from Sioux Falls would be permitted. This was a courtesy extended in view of Sioux Falls and the Chamber being the host city and show sponsor. That year the new queen got a $250 wardrobe, $250 scholarship and use of an automobile during the Farm Show Week. In 1970, after sixteen years of successful productions, the Sioux Empire Queen Show ended. Thank you Sylvia for all your hard work those 16 years! T rue peace of mind isn’t just finding somewhere to stay. It’s finding somewhere you never want to leave.
