Brief summary of each of the layers
As a handout, play dough models of the Earth will be handed out containing layers for people to cut in half and stick labelled toothpicks in each of the layers
2. LAYER 1: INNER CORE
• Right in the centre of Earth
• Contains solid metal
• Hottest layer
• It is about 5000-6000 degrees Celsius
3. LAYER 2: OUTER CORE
• 2200km thick
• Made of melted magma
• Heat from inner core melts metal in outer core
• 4000-5000 degrees Celsius
4. LAYER 3: LOWER MANTLE
• 1,400 miles thick
• Further from the core is more rigid
• Fluidity and convection cause seismic activity
5. LAYER 4: UPPER MANTLE
• 670km below the Earth’s surface
• Combination of solid and melted rock
• Contains iron, oxygen, silicon, magnesium and
aluminum
• The layer directly beneath the crust
6. LAYER 5: CRUST
• Around 23 degrees Celsius
• The layer species live on
• Solid layer
• Oceanic crust: granite, sedimentary and
metamorphic rock
• Continental crust: up to 70km thick
• Thinnest layer
7. LAYER 6: ATMOSPHERE
• Non-physical layer
• Gaseous layer around the Earth
• IS in place because of the force of gravity
