More than Just Lines on a Map: Best Practices for U.S Bike Routes
Two Old Hippies Unite
1. A story of two hippies and
the creation of Breedlove
Guitars.
Mike Grosek
2. THAT BREEDLOVE SPARK
Tom Bedell and Kim Breedlove take over a company that chose the harder
path in acoustic guitar production and design.
Breedlove Guitars are unique and hand crafted by skilled luthiers.
From their unusual headstock, asymmetrical body shapes, and perfect
finger
picking design Breedlove Guitars are one of a kind.
Made from Pacific Northwest indigenous woods like redwood,
red cedar, and flamed myrtlewood.
3. TOM BEDELL AND HIS $500 MILLION HISTORY
At NAMM 1967 he sold Japanese guitars under the Bedell name and was
labeled “The Youngest NAMM Show Exhibitor In History.”
Tom Bedell started his career building Pure Fishing into a $500 million
supplier of fishing tackle.
At NAMM 2010 with the launch of the Bedell Guitar line he raffled off a retro
VW bus creating tremendous buzz, and putting Bedell Guitars on the map.
Tom and his wife Molly acquired Breedlove Guitars and incorporated it into
their Two Old Hippies venture.
With new management, the Bedell and Breedlove brands, Breedlove Guitar
company is thriving.
4. THE WORKS…
The Breedlove and Bedell companies have combined their administrative
functions, but the two lines of guitars have not overlapped.
“Guitars are works of art. If you compromise their character, you kill the
magic.” Tom Bedell
Bedell Guitars are said to offer traditional designs with exceptional value,
while Breedlove Guitars are the complete opposite.
“build the best instruments possible, whatever the cost” using
unconventional designs, unusual woods, and extraordinary inlay work.
5. THE SHOP...
The Breedlove plant opened in 2008 in Bend, Oregon.
The shop has six different departments that each guitar goes through is it is
made.
• Part department:
• Raw Wood Processing
• CNC Processing
• Bending & Bracing Operations
• Body Department
• Build, Bind, and Scrape-out Process
• Neck Department
• Filed, Sanded, and Shaped.
• Every neck is inspected before it moves on.
• Finish Department
• Takes about 2 weeks.
• Many carefully applied layers that are sanded down.
• Final layer is buffed to show a high gloss.
6. THE SHOP CONTINUED…
• String Up Department
• Each guitar spends three days being fine-tuned and adjusted to
perfection
• Final Inspection
• Involves roughly 35 different assessments
• Then packaged and sent out to the customers
