Overdiagnosis happens when people receive a diagnosis that they don’t need. It can happen when well people without symptoms are identified as having a pathological condition that is not destined to cause illness and death. Overdiagnosis can also occur when disease definitions or boundaries are widened. A third route to overdiagnosis is via disease mongering. By definition, overdiagnosing people cause them more harm than good. In 2018 Copenhagen will have the honour of hosting the 6th international conference on Preventing Overdiagnosis.
