Jeder Mensch, egal wo er sich au ält auf der Welt, hat ein Recht auf Privatsphäre. Manchmal möchten wir
die Tür zumachen, für uns sein, durchatmen, nachdenken, uns vor den Blicken anderer verbergen. Men-
schen auf der Flucht haben o nicht die Möglichkeit, sich zurückzuziehen. Nicht auf der Reise und nicht in
den Notunterkün en, die in Deutschland o in großen Hallen eingerichtet sind. Meistens behelfen sich die
Geflüchteten mit Bauzäunen oder Holzla en, an denen Zelt- oder LKW-Planen befes gt sind, um sich eigene
Räume zu schaffen.
Die Berliner Architek n Michelle Howard hat nun zusammen mit Benjamin Grabherr und Nikola Znaor eine
mobile Behausung entwickelt und zur Serienreife gebracht, die ästhe sch anspruchsvoll und kinderleicht
aufzubauen ist. Sie besteht aus 14 Pappwänden, die sich ohne jedes Werkzeug zu einem sechs Quadratmeter
großen Zimmer falten lassen, das Privatsphäre scha , ohne dunkel und abweisend zu sein.
Die weißen Wände laden ein, sie zu verändern. Kinder können die Außenwände bemalen, um ihr Zimmer wied-
erzufinden, mit Nadeln lassen sich Fotos oder Plakate an die Innenwände pinnen, die sich auch tapezieren oder
anderwei g verschönern lassen. An die umlaufenden Stricke können Kleiderbügel gehängt werden.
Der Raum ist privat, aber keine Höhle. Durch die Schlitze am Boden lässt sich der Fußboden wischen, ohne dass
die Pappe durch Kontakt mit Wasser aufweicht und die Konstruk on an Standfes gkeit verliert.
Der Eingang wird mit einer Sto ahn verhängt, die in verschiedenen Farben angeboten wird.
Der Raum bekommt Stabilität durch die Faltung und die oben und unten umlaufenden Seile. Sowohl die Pap-
pen als auch die Kabelbinder, die Seile und der Vorhang entsprechen der Brandschutznorm.
Alle Materialien werden in einem Karton angeliefert und können zu Zweit oder zu mehreren im Handumdrehen
und schneller als ein IKEA-Regal aufgebaut werden. So entsteht ein temporäres Refugium, das, wenn endlich
ein besserer Ort, um zu bleiben gefunden ist, einfach wieder auseinandergefaltet werden kann.
Die Konstruk on erlaubt es, mehrere Zimmer zu einer Familienwohnung oder Wohngemeinscha zusammen-

The impulse to make a personal claim on space is deeply human. People do it, o en subconsciously, even
in public places: in restaurants we gravitate towards the corner table, at the yoga studio we try always to
be in the same spot, in the office we mark our desk with plants or pictures. Such gestures affirm our right
to be and to choose, they afford a sense of security.
In situa ons where people have been forced out of their familiar environment – their home, or even their
country – and must be sheltered en masse, claiming a personal space becomes more difficult, yet the need
to do so is more essen al. The newcomers in Europe have navigated all manner of borders and fences,
literal and metaphorical, to get here. Amidst the talk of dismantling the barriers – na onal, interna onal,
legal, bureaucra c – that make refugee journeys such an ordeal, we rarely hear the acknowledgement that
some walls are necessary: the walls that protect a person’s dignity.
In macy Par ons offer individuals a temporary refuge from the crowd. Made from recyclable flame
retardant white cardboard, the par ons come flat-packed and are designed to be assembled without
tools or fuss. A few cable es and a length of rope help to hold the elegant construc on in place, but its
extraordinary stability comes from the unique way in which the material is folded. The Japanese architect
Yoshio Taniguchi once asserted that, “Architecture is basically a container of something.” The In macy
Par ons provide a simple container for the self. Every unit offers a neutral place of retreat amenable to
personaliza on: each white wall invites you to pen a drawing or put up photos, different door hangings
allow you a choice of colour.
Where status is uncertain, as it is for many asylum seekers, having some sense of boundaries, of a safe
space, becomes all the more vital. The temporary nature of the Par ons in mates that things will change,
you will move on – but un l then you have a room of your own.
