3. The FI-WARE Programme
• Goal: capture opportunities derived from the new
wave of digitalization of life and businesses
• Strategy: Build an ecosystem that will work as
catalyst for capturing the opportunities. Lead
standardization in Smart Cities and IoT (Internet of
Things)
• Pillars:
– : a generic, open standard platform which
serve the needs of developers in multiple domains
– : a meeting point where innovation takes
place, an opportunities can be incubated
– : a program that funds developers and
entrepreneurs, and ignites roll-out of the ecosystem
– : the suite of tools easing deployment
and operation of FI-WARE instance nodes

FIWARE Generic Enablers (GEs)
A FIWARE Generic Enabler (GE) is a general-purpose platform function available through an API. A Reference Architecture can then be realised by combining a number of GEs.
FIWARE GE Specifications are open (public and royalty-free) (Note to presenter: If an enabler’s specification is open, it means that a developer is allowed to ‘see inside’ the enabler to understand how it works and what information/resource it provides or receives. For proprietary systems, an enabler is may be a black box and so the developer may have to take it on faith that the enabler is doing what it’s expected to do, but there’s no way of telling other than through exhaustive testing.)
FIWARE GE implementation (FIWARE GEi): (Note to presenter: an implementation means that the developer has taken a GE and used in in their particular application or product. A platform in this context, can be thought of as an operating system in that if a developer creates a product for an Android phone, the Android operating system is the platform that the developer is using.)
A platform product that results from the implementation of a GE (open specification).
GEs can be implemented in a number of ways, depending on the use case, and so there may be a number of GE implementations for the same GE.
One open source reference implementation of each FIWARE GE (FIWARE GEri):
• Well-known open source license (Note to presenter: ‘Well-known’ here means that it is one of the common open source licensing structures (e.g. Apache, AGPL, BSD, etc. Just because a software is open source doesn’t mean it’s free to use, only that any recipients of the software are given the same rights that were given to the developer).
• Publicly available Technical Roadmap updated in every release
Available FIWARE GEis, GEris and incubated enablers are published on the FIWARE Catalogue. (Note to presenter: For any questions, steer them to the FI-WARE website.)
The GEs in the FI-WARE catalogue are organised into ‘chapters. This is a list of those chapters and briefly what functionality each chapter covers.
(Note to presenter: UI = User Interface, SDN = Software Defined Network, I2ND = Interfaces to Networks and Devices (however it is now referred to as “Advanced Middleware and Interfaces to Networks and Devices” in the catalogue.)
Thus FI-WARE GEs can have a very positive impact on complex application development time as the necessary GEs (light blue boxes) have already been developed. This leaves the developer to focus on developing the components that are unique to their particular use case or application (e.g. dark blue boxes, a.k.a. specific enablers).
