2. Time Frame The State of Indiana has enacted legislation to allow a grandfathering period into Addiction Counseling Licensure This grandfathering period will end July 1, 2011
3. IPLA The Indiana Professional Licensing Association (IPLA) administers the new addiction counselor license ICAADA administers a certification for alcohol and drug (substance abuse) counselors
4. More Information Please see the IPLA information on how to obtain a license through this grandfathering period All questions about licensure should be directed to the IPLA, however, ICAADA will be happy to help as much as possible, without giving any legal advice on how you should proceed with licensure
5. Our Understanding At this time, ICAADA has the understanding that after the grandfathering licensure time period has passed the certification offered by ICAADA will be valid in the State of Indiana, 44 other states, and 22 other countries, as well as 3 branches of the military. The license issued by the IPLA will be valid in Indiana. This license may or may not be recognized outside the state of Indiana.
6. Our Understanding At this time ICAADA and its’ representatives are trying to have IPLA adopt the ADC and AADC exams as part of the licensure process. This would allow a candidate to take only one exam for both certification and licensure. An added advantage to taking this standardized test is that the ADC and AADC exams are internationally recognized.
7. Our Understanding ICAADA firmly believes that anyone certified by ICAADA will continue to practice therapy for substance abuse just as they always have. This belief, however, does not constitute a legal opinion and is not offered as advice. Some restrictions in the use of certain titles may occur after July 1, 2011.
