So you got an idea, some code, and now you only need the users and contributors? A good idea is not enough to have a successful project. Open source software projects need also marketing, promotion, and optimization. We will look at the technical and non-technical level on how to enhance OSS projects. This with the goal to get more happy users and gain more traction. I will share from personal experience what works (and what not!), including examples. Subjects include simplicity, the website, dealing with social media, optimize for users and search engines, and the tiny details that matter. This talk is useful for developers, contributors, and also users of open source software. No programming skills are required.

Danny Rosen went over what open source is, why it's important, what it means to have an open source product and why it's important to customers. He also discussed what it's like to be involved in the open source community from the perspective of a user, a product manager and a developer, and the challenges and opportunities related to community management and community involvement.

Co-presented with Dave Neary at OSCON 2011. Every community manager knows that community metrics are important, but how do you come up with a plan and figure out what you want to measure? Most community managers have their own set of hacky scripts for extracting data from various sources after they decide what metrics to track. There is no standardised Community Software Dashboard you can use to generate near-real-time stats on your community growth. Like most open source projects, we have diverse community infrastructure for MeeGo, including Mailman, Drupal, Mediawiki, IRC, git, OpenSuse Build Service, Transifex and vBulletin. We wanted to unify these sources together, extract meaningful statistics from the data we had available to us, and present it to the user in a way that made it easy to see if the community was developing nicely or not. Building on the work of Pentaho, Talend, MLStats, gitdm and a host of others, we built a generic and open source community dashboard for the MeeGo project, and integrated it into the website. The project was run in the open at http://wiki.meego.com/Metrics/Dashboard and all products of the project are available for reuse. This presentation will cover the various metrics we wanted to measure, how we extracted the data from a diverse set of services to do it, and more importantly, how you can do it too.

Most open source projects are not “taking-off”, although they are really good! How to securely deploy your containers, by the author of rkhunter and auditing tool Lynis. Many introductory talks about Docker and its container technology, have been given. This attention to the subject is not surprising, seeing the amount of people "doing DevOps" now. With container technology being fairly new on the Linux platform, the security aspects of containers are often being overlooked. While Linux containers do still not fully contain from a security point of view, we can definitely improve the security level of them. In this talk, we have a look at the underlying Linux security measures, followed by the features Docker itself has to offer. The goal is to get an understanding how we can deploy containers in a secure way. After all, Docker is no longer just a toy, and our precious data is involved.

Modeling languages are generally applied for developing systems and software – both internally, with domain-specific languages, and with standardized languages targeting a general purpose and a wide audience.
