Introduction
-Good morning inmates.
-After meeting with some of you, we have decided to make a few changes around LEAF.
As you know. LEAF stands for ‘Love and education for all females’
Before we begin, let’s have a background review.
Why are we an only- female prison?
Our rehabilitation programs are more efficient. For example….
This fits our philosophy well. (Say philosophy)
Our healthcare is more specific. 13 male 1 female
Right now, many of you may be wondering why our philosophy became rehabilitation and deterrence when initially it had been planned to be retribution and deterrence, as many of you heard during preliminary rounds of planning for the up and coming prison system. Let us now watch a short video of our behind the scenes discussion to shed some light on this situation.
And now the moment you’ve all been waiting for… the blueprint of the new prison building!! Please refer to your group’s individual handouts of the blueprints now. As you can see, the prison building is very big and comprehensive so we will now be running through the parts of the building individually.
Firstly, we will begin with the centre of attraction (literally), THE YARD. (it is in the middle so that it is accessible during times of emergency, eg a fire, doesn’t tempt the prisoners to escape), basic equipment like those we often find in HDB flats
Subsidised fees, even cheaper than those the elderly receive using the pioneer card
Listed are a few highlights
Explain what GED is (has assessments as well). Photo shows two Bermudian inmates with fellow inmates at the graduation ceremony held in the prison itself, for them attaining their GED qualifications.
The fees for the education are subsidised by the government and inmates can work to pay for their education.
Successful ex-convicts include the eighteen chefs boss http://danielfooddiary.com/2013/10/31/eighteenchefs/
PUT IN TRISHA’S QUOTE ON INMATES BEING MORE HARDWORKING
Show RTA video, carried out during sharing session
Prisoners only allowed to once a week when they are in deterrence phase
Why we allowed contact humane, there are exceptions and rules which are settled on a case-by-case basis
Other places that you will be offered jobs include: Laundry Room, Cleaning, Gardening
Solitary confinement is torture and hence we chose double sharing which will ensure they have enough space but a companion as well
Guards are mostly female but male are for guarding the more important areas and have one male at each area.
Guard houses in prison cells
Guards are not only for discipline but also to keep the prisoners safe
For all of you new inmates, you will be going though this phase first so I’m sure you all would want to know more about this phase and why it seems so mundane and boring.
We learnt that prisoners are people too and most importantly retribution is not always rationale and may not be good to use as a philosophy.
Charles Richardson, a Bermudian ex-convict who was jailed in 1995 for shooting two people once said, “You are at the stage of life now where you have two routes before you. One is less travelled and there is the route that almost everybody takes” Mr. Charles Richardson was one of those people who took the road less travelled, he studied law while in jail and is now an established lawyer in Bermuda. At Leaf, we hope that our programmes would all inspire you to take the road less travelled even though you made a wrong turn in the road of life. Thank you and we hope that you will have a meaningful stay at Leaf.
