ONE OF SEVERAL black
and white photographs
hanging in the new Bu
Khalaf Coffee Shop
features a series of
interesting symbols
drawn on a wall. Ancient
symbols of Dilmun
perhaps? Actually they’re
nothing more mystical
than an old accounting
G U L F L I F E 1 0 0
1938 that’s still operating
in the souq today. The
circles with dots in
the middle apparently
represented tea with
milk, the conical shapes,
sodas, and the straight
lines, black tea, a line
through any of them
signifying that the bill
had been paid, following
WHAT TO SEE
TIME FOR TEA
which the charcoal
figures were wiped off
the wall.
The simple lines are
the most prolific, tightly
packed side by side to
resemble a bar code,
which isn’t surprising
considering that back
then one got 25 cups of
tea for the equivalent of
100 fils in Indian rupees
(the currency in Bahrain
until 1959).
I remark that there’s
no symbol for coffee,
and Khalifa says that’s
because his father
didn’t sell any coffee.
“No coffee in a coffee
shop?” I ask, surprised.
“The coffee was only in
the name,” he says, “not
in the shop.” This was
true for most “gahwas”
(traditional cafes) he
assures me. Instead,
you’d get your caffeine fix
from a man who roamed
the market with a pot of
coffee and small cups
that he’d keep refilling
until you shook the
cup from side to side,
indicating you’d had
enough.
At the new Bu
Khalaf Coffee Shop,
however, light-brown
cardamom-flavoured
Arabic coffee is on the
menu alongside tea,
because, says Khalifa,
foreign visitors like it.
And tourists do form
a large portion of the
clientele here since this
is both a coffee shop and
a living museum. It’s one
of the newest additions
system dating to around
the mid-20th century.
“This was my father’s
way of keeping track
of what people had
drunk and whether or
not they’d paid,” says
Abdulla Khalifa, who
runs this offshoot of the
coffee shop his father,
Bu Khalaf, opened in
to the Shaikh Ebrahim
Centre, which consists of
several restored houses
showcasing various
aspects of Muharraq’s
rich heritage, from
embroidery and pearling
to music, specifically that
of the former capital’s
most famous oud player,
Mohammed Bin Faris.
His picture is on the back
wall and his voice issues
from a 1950s radio that’s
been reconfigured as a
speaker, one of several
relics from the original
coffee shop brought here
to provide a glimpse
into the history of this
Bahraini institution.
These include an old
gramophone, a brass
rose-water dispenser
used to cleanse hands,
some Iranian ceramic
shisha pipes and old
glass soda bottles dating
from the time when, in
the absence of electricity,
they would have been
kept cold with a large
block of ice.
Hanging above the
door is a black and
white picture taken in
those days, showing a
very basic space with
worn Bahraini benches
Abdulla Khalifa at the
Bu Khalaf coffee shop
matched by a clientele
of worn men, this being
before the financial
impact of oil’s discovery
was felt, when many
Muharraq residents were
still pearl divers.
Bu Khalaf was among
them until an injury to his
hand made it impossible
for him to continue doing
that physically punishing
work and the coffee shop
became his main source
of income. Why a coffee
shop? “It was a cheap
business to start up,”
says Khalifa. “There was
the water, then you just
needed tea, sugar and
money for the trading
licence.” This cost
BD1.200 for the year
according to a copy of
the document hanging on
the wall, which features
a small head-and-
shoulders photograph of
the late Khalaf.
A humble man, he’s
now permanently in
the company of royals
and dignitaries who have
visited his renowned
coffee shop over the
years and whose pictures
surround him on the walls.
But the most
entertaining “exhibit”
here is Khalifa himself,
who’s happy to regale
visitors with stories
about the business he’s
lived and breathed since,
at the age of eight, he
began to help his father
in the shop, waiting
tables and washing up,
after school. At the time,
he could barely reach the
tables and remembers
scalding himself with
hot tea, but the reward
came on weekends when
he took the 25 fils he’d
earned and went to the
Muharraq Cinema.
Stories and anecdotes
flow, along with the
tea, and continue as we
stroll through Muharraq,
leaving the beautifully
facelifted houses of the
Shaikh Ebrahim Centre
behind to enter the
shabbier, grittier world of
the souq.
Here, we stop
first at the newest of
Khalifa’s coffee shops, a
sprawling, no-frills space
right on a main road,
where groups of men
smoke sheesha on the
veranda, while others
play dominoes inside.
Then it’s on to the
covered souq, for a
cup of tea in the place
it all began in 1938.
It’s recognisable from
the picture, though the
benches are in a better
state of repair and
there has been some
modernisation – an
updated billing system
for one. A few men sit
mesmerised by the
flickering image on a TV,
while others sip tea in the
passage outside, but it’s
clearly not the social hub
it was in its heyday.
“Before, there were
big tents outside where
people sold vegetables
and fruit, meat, fish... and
here there were shops
selling cooking oil, rice,
dates and plates, but
now…” Khalifa gestures
to the surrounding stores
selling cheap clothing
and household goods
made in China, clearly
unimpressed.
There are, however,
signs that change is once
again afoot, change that,
this time, has Khalifa’s
approval. Tarpaulins and
digging gear testify to
a project spearheaded
by Bahrain’s Minister of
Culture, Shaikha Mai Bint
Mohammed Al-Khalifa,
to restore a number of
old buildings around
the souq and establish
a Pearl Route, which
will be submitted for
inclusion on the World
Heritage List.
But there’s one area
that the restoration team
have strict instructions
not to touch: Khalifa
points outside to a
section of the crumbling
wall where the faint
remnants of lines and
circles drawn in charcoal
can just be made out.
