1. Vivienne Westwood: circa 1970s

In the late 1960s, the hippie movement was still in fashion in the streets of London.
However, this did not inspire Vivienne Westwood and current boyfriend Malcolm
McLaren. They were more interested in 1950’s clothing, music and memorabilia, more
specifically rebellious, grudge looks. Westwood began designing 1950s inspired clothing
for McLaren and named them Teddy Boy clothes. She later opened Let it Rock at 430
Kings Road, where she sold her unique designs.
From floral wide-legged hippie pants to hard-core leather and zippers
By 1972, Westwood’s interests had turned to biker clothing, zippers and leather. The
shop was rebranded with skulls and crossbones and renamed Too Fast to Live, Too
Young to Die. The designer started to design T-shirts with provocative messages and
hard-core images. These creations led to prosecution under obscenity laws, but that didn’t
stop this rebellious designer from designing what she believed in. By 1974, the shop was
renamed SEX – a shop unlike anything seen in England at the time with the slogan:
rubber-wear for the office.
The beginning of the punk rock era
In 1976, the shop reopened as Seditionaries, transforming the straps and zips of obscure
sexual fetishism into fashion and inspiring a D.I.Y. aesthetic. The media called it “punk
rock”.
Even though Westwood’s ideas and designs were seen as weird, provocative and obscene
in the midst of a 1970s hippie movement, she continued to create what she believed in. In
the end, the fashion world made room for the designer’s hard-core aesthetic. She is such
an inspiration to women everywhere. Her story proves that if you continue to do what
you love, success will always live by you.
