Question 2- How does your media
product represent particular social
groups?
By Megan Newson
How my magazine represents the demographic:
I think that my music magazine’s age is mostly aimed at mid/late teens. This is because the
artist who is the central image on the front cover of the magazine is in his late teens himself,
therefore more likely for his target audience to be this age too, Another reason for this could
be that the topics explored within the magazine are things such as festivals and gigs which a lot
of late teens will be going to. There isn’t a specific target gender for my magazine, as it hasn’t
got something that will only interest girls or boys, everything inside will appeal to both sexes, I
made my magazine like this so anybody could buy it so there is a wider range of readers. My
magazine is based in the UK, as the festivals advertised are in Chelmsford, Reading, London and
Birmingham, Other things such as advertisement of the best places to “hang out” would also
be in London. I think that my magazine is at middle class target audience, I think this because
the price of the magazine is £3.25 which is fairly priced, however in comparison NME magazine
is it at quite a high price, although my magazine has more information and more pages
involved, which works out a similar price when you compare it. The genre type of my magazine
is Acoustic/Indie/Folk/Pop which could come under any class depending on who likes the
genre. However my magazine does not feature A-list stars so this would put my magazine at
middle class in my opinion. My magazine does not specify in a particular sexuality or physical
ability, it applies to any sexuality and would not offend any kind of sexuality, it also applies to
any physical ability, disability tickets are offered when winning T in the park tickets.
How do the models, layout design and language
combine to represent a particular social group?
I think that my model represents a certain social group, as the costume that I told him to wear includes clothes of an
indie/alternative sort of style, which is also represented in the music that he creates which is spoken about during the
interview that I done.
The layout design is again made specifically at a middle
class, The font used is “Berlin Sans FB Demi” which is
not a formal or high class font, it looks casual and fits
in with the theme. The images I have used were
planned to look professional however I then edited
them to make them look more realistic and alternative.
It has appropriate colours through out, so that it does
not look messy or tacky. I made use of showing my
model play the guitar in one of my images as you can
see above, as I thought this would also relate to my
readers as it shows the music genre so if they are
interested in the instruments that are shown this will
hopefully appeal to them even more. Language that I
have used in my text could also represent certain social
groups, I have used a more informal way of writing as
this is the way I expect my audience would write and
that it what I would like them to see within my
magazine.
The camera shots and the angle they are taken at could also
represent social group, the medium shot of my model on the
front cover is a posed shot however my double page spread
central image of my model is a casual shot of my model playing
the guitar and singing, it isn't a low or high angle shot it is
focused at the same level as the camera, I done this because the
story on the double page spread is about him being a normal
teen who has came out of no-where. I want the readers to feel
at the same class as him which is why I didn't do a low angle
show to show my model above which would signify him having
a higher class
How my magazine reflects the representation of the intended
audience:
My magazine reflects the representation of the intended audience by
using the images that I have, for example :This image especially
represents the intended audience in many ways. One way being the
fact that my model is in his late teens which is the intended target
audience age, another being the fact that he has a guitar that he is
playing, this will attract readers interested in Acoustic/Indie/ Folk/Pop
music which is what the music genre of the magazine is.
offering things such as free posters of a certain music genre usually
represents what kind of music genre that the magazine is based on.
For example Kodaline- which comes under Acoustic and indie.
The heading of my double page spread attracts a middle class reader,
as does the rest of the writing within my magazine. Like this font, I
have used a casual/cartoon feeling font so that its obvious that the
text is not formal
Advertising festivals show what type of genre that the magazine is,
you wouldn’t advertise a pop festival in a rock magazine for example.
Which is why I chose this kind of festival to offer free tickets away as it
includes the same genres as the magazines intended audience will be
interested in.
Is my magazine subverting or conforming to
certain stereotypes?
My music magazine doesn’t really comment on any typical stereotyping topics. However
one of the things that we assume is that Acoustic/indie/folk/pop are not necessarily high
class genres of music because of the price of the magazine and the fonts and language used
through out it, however we are not saying that all of the listeners to this genre are middle
class, they could be low class or high class as well, Just the majority of listeners tend to be
middle class. On my double page spread my model is holding and playing the guitar
wearing an indie inspired outfit in which I chose for him to wear. This could possibly be seen
as stereotyping the way that singers of this genre dress, or possibly that this genre of
singers have to be able to play the guitar or any kind of instrument which isn't the case. On
my double page spread at the bottom I put a twitter name for my models page, this is so
that the readers of my magazine can find him on twitter and follow him and find out what
he is doing, this is stereotyping teens (the readers) to assume that they have a twitter
account and would be involved with social networking in some way or another.
