Bacterial meningitis is an infection of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, known as the meninges. It is caused by various bacteria that can enter the bloodstream and spread to the meninges. Symptoms include headache, fever, stiff neck, nausea, confusion and seizures. Bacterial meningitis requires urgent antibiotic treatment in a hospital to prevent disability or death.
