to enable the examiners to ensure that the study and
work is your own
to give you the opportunity to defend your study and
work.
to clarify any areas where there may be some
confusion.
 to ensure that the you have potentiality for the
specific purpose.
Before joining any job.
After completing any programme e.g. BBA, MBA
After submitting thesis paper.
It is now a common phenomenon that before
entering any job and passing any degree you have to
face a viva voce. It does not matter from which school
have you passed, number of degrees holding, the
experience you have or whom you know; if you fail to
do the interview successfully, you will not get the job.
So we can say that some planning and actions are
needed to win in interview . Now we will see how we
face the viva voce successfully.
 Home working : it may looks odd to hear it but it has no
alternatives. You have to get a good idea about the
particulars of the company such as, co. strategy, products ,
mission ,vision etc. But don’t forget to go through the major
key points of your study area.
 Check the interviewers : if you have some idea about the
interviewers then it will be helpful for you to deal with them.
 Interview style: different organization have different
interview style as some focus on behavioral question, some
on case studies, some on test general knowledge questions. It
will be helpful for you if you know their style.
continue……..
Connect with people
who interviewed before and
company’s employees.
 know about the job: Get a minimum idea about the job you are interviewing for.
 Prepare answer for some common questions:
Tell me about yourself.
tell me about you background and accomplishment
what are your strength ? Weakness ?
what interests you about our company?
why company will hire you?
continue…….
 Practice : After all practice makes a man perfect. Stimulate an
interview scenario with your friends , where he interviews you.
Self interview before mirror is a good rehearsal.
 Resume : Take excess resume with you even the interviewer has
one. Please don’t fold it.
 Clothing: Employers reject improperly dressed candidates.
Generally , formal office wear will work right. Things that should
be avoided;
* No sports jacket for men.
* No pantsuits for women.
* Dress for your boss’s job.
* You can’t be too conservative.
* Extremes in hair, clothes, make-up and jewellery.
continue…….
Stress minimization: the company wants to hire
someone who is self assured and can deal with
pressure. Always maintain a relaxed attitude. To
maintain it, you need to know that your career is not
riding on a single interview.
Take it easy. Viva board is not a detention center. Keep
in mind that every human being has some
limitations.
continue…….
 Read your own resume- be sure that you don’t have to
look into your resume to recall details during the
interview.
 Timing : arrive at least 15 minutes early for your
appointment
During the interview session:
Introduction:
 Greetings ,example : "Good morning, I am…"
 Maintain good eye contact during the interview.
 Maintain high energy level.
 Take seat by taking permission.
 Back straight.
 No smoking.
Note: It is to your advantage if a subject of mutual interest
arises, but do not fake knowledge. Be yourself. Dignity,
confidence, and self-respect are of great importance.
The Site:
 Employer's office: If there is more than one chair, take
the one closest to the side of the interviewer’s desk.
The desk is the barrier between you and the
interviewer.
Style
 Eye contact! Look directly at the interviewer.
 Listen! Give the person the opportunity to talk. Do
not touch anything on the interviewer's desk. Do not
move around with anything you have, such as a pen,
tie, etc.
 Relax and be confident (do deep breathing to relax).
 Be enthusiastic-use your eyes, hands, and voice
inflection to show support
Sample interview questions and their answers:
Ques: How would you describe
yourself?
Ans: You must prepare yourself
earlier what you tell about yourself in
the interview board. You should
describe attributes that enhances
suitability for the position. Try to
add something that is not described
in the CV.
Ques: What are your long-term goals?
Ans: Long-term goals must fit with the organization’s
objectives. For example if you apply for a sales
manager’s post, you can say your long-term goals are
to bring you the top marketing position by proving
your worth.
Ques: Why did you leave your last job?
Ans: The possible answers are:
 Job was not as it was described to me
Organization changed its focus/goals

Ques:Why do you want this job?
Ans: This job suits my career objectives. I want this job

experiences that relate to the position for which you
are applying.
Ques: What are your weakenesses?
Ans: . Don’t mention anything that could make the

example “I am always late for everything.”
Continue……..

be strength such as “I am a workaholic!”
“I am sometimes impatient, which
drives me to work excessively.”
“If I start on a project, I sometimes
forget to go to lunch.”
 Continue……..
Ques: Describe some times when you were not very
satisfied or pleased with your performance. What did
you do about it?
Ans: I scored poor marks in Business calculas test, which
made me unhappy. I was not going to let it continue. I
went to my course teacher and sought some
suggestions. My course teacher helped me out
incredibly. My grades soon improved and I was able
to overcome the situation.
Continue……..
QUES:“Why is your GPA not higher?”
ANS: Don’t whine or make excuses
 Your response should enhance your value as an
employee
You were very involved with sports, extracurriculars that
may have hurt your grades, but made you more well-
rounded
You held a job while in school, which hurt your grades but
gave you great experience
Ques:Describe a challenging work issue you had to face, and
how you dealt with it?
Ans: Get a list of challenging work you were issued earlier.
Now find something in your past that highlights a skill,
experience or situation that might occur or be needed
going forward.
Ques: How do you handle conflict?
Ans: “I know everything cannot run smoothly at work all the
time. When there is a conflict I usually try to determine
the source of the problem and see if it can be solved. This
might involve other members of the work team discussing
the problem and offering possible solutions. I would then
try to pick the solution which appears to have the best
outcome and put it into action.”
Ques: In what way do you think you can contribute to
our company?
Ans: Preparing to answer this question requires a 2-step
preparation: assessing your skills and researching the
needs of the company. Considering the job opening,
what are the skills needed? Make a list of the requisite
skills and then list concrete examples of your
possession of the skill. This question, by the way is
just another version of “why should we hire you?”
Continue………….
you may highlight the basic requirements for this post
and relate your skills and experience to that
requirements.
Ques:Where do you see yourself in five years?
Ans:One way to answer this question is to look back on
your accomplishments to date: “I started out in my
profession as a junior clerk while I completed my
graduation. Soon after 2 years I got promotion and
became senior executive.
Continue………….
This has been my pattern for my career. I learn quickly on
the job and am willing to take training and workshop to
augment my experience. In five years, I feel I will continue
to learn, to grow into a position of more responsibility and
will make a significant contribution to the organization.
Ques: What do you think the employee’s responsibilities
are to the company?
Ans: The possible answer to this question are:
1) To perform my work accordingly
Continue…………..
2)To be loyal
3)To act as part of the team
4)To earn trust of the employer
5)To grow a passion for the company
Ques: How much salary do you expect from the company?
Ans: To answer this question you must follow certain things.
continue………..
For example:
1)Avoid taking salary until the job has been
ensured
2)Negotiate salary from strength
3)If unemployed, seek a salary equivalent to
your last earnings
Ques: Have you any query about the company?
Ans: These questions should communicate your interest in
the position. While answering the question ..
Continue………
While answering the questions:
 Be concise
 Be specific
 Sell yourself
 Maintain your self-control
 Pay attention

what they are said during the viva.
