Why I choose a career in the medical field.
The medical field has always been a childhood dream of mine. I find the human body
fascinating. When I was a young child I wanted to be a doctor. Then nursing became an
alternative as I got older. Becoming a nurse will help me achieve my professional goal. I have
always felt a deep desire to help people whenever they needed it, and would stop at no end to
help them. I want to help people achieve and maintain good health, to make someone feel
special, let them know that someone cares about them and getting well, whatever the situation,
and comfort them when they are in pain or even dying. I also want a career where I can earn a
respectable living but still feel fulfilled and interested in what I’m doing. The possibilities are
endless; I know that my day to day duties will never be the same. I know that being a nurse is
very stressful but rewarding too, plus the salary and benefits are tremendous.
Many of the jobs I have actually wanted to do and tried have never really worked out. I have
tried waitress, working in restaurants and even managed a pharmacy store. Office work never
quite caught my attention. Answering phones, sorting files, and sitting behind a computer were
not interesting to me. I loved the human interaction of the restaurant, however the work itself
was not challenging. I have no doubt that I want to pursue a career in nursing. Health care is
exactly the type of professional challenge I have been seeking all my life. When I worked at
Jewish home Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, I realized that it’s truly the personal impact of a
health giver that is satisfying and rewarding.

My goal is to become a registered nurse and to dedicate my life to helping people. I am
determined to become a nurse to touch lives not only as a provider of health care but also as a
teacher. I am committed to excelling personally and professionally in all that I do and to serve as
a role model by leading a healthy lifestyle.
I came to this goal as a result of my family background and my life experiences. I have a
strong work ethic. I am very loyal and trustworthy and always the person my friends, family and
co-workers would go to for advice or to empathize. I love helping people and have a big heart. I
am the kind of person who will give my lunch to someone who has no money to eat. I will take
that extra five minutes and listen to a patient when I am pressed for time because health care is
not only to provide treatment, but it’s also expressing patience and being a great listener.
When I was looking into career options, nursing attracted my attention for a variety of
reasons, you could go anywhere, work with adults, children, in public health, prisons,
physicians’ offices, schools, factories, and were only limited by your level of education; I found
that nursing could be whatever I wanted to make of it. People need nurses in all aspects of life. If
I were to ever feel “expended out” in one area, I could educate myself and expand into another
field of nursing. If I needed to move to another country, I could transfer and easily find my niche
there. The sensation that you feel when you know you accomplished your goal to aid an
individual is priceless. The potential is endless in this field, from specialty areas to general
population, and from newborns through geriatrics. Nursing is probably the most personally
rewarding job.
What I appreciated most about the first module was its reminder about the importance of
safety. Working in a safe manner is something that we all must keep in the back of our minds
regardless of which area in the healthcare field we ultimately go into. I also appreciated the talk

on patient confidentiality, because at the end of the day we’re treating people. People with their
own unique thoughts, feelings hopes, fears and desires; and they should be treated with all the
respect and care that entails. With that in mind patient confidentiality deals with a specific part of
the overall idea of quality care.
The fact that many patients are already scared and worried when they come into the
hospital. They need to be able to know that their privacy is being respected as much as possible
and that they can put their trust in the providers caring for them. Because if the patient doesn’t
feel they can trust the provider then they will simply refuse to cooperate in any way.
Another subject that I found very important is communication between providers. If
providers are unable to share information, discuss care options, and treat patients together
effectively then the healthcare system as a whole simply cannot function. This is why it is vitally
important that as any healthcare provider goes through their education and eventual integration
into the healthcare workforce they learn how to communicate both with patients and other health
care providers, as well as learning the terms that are used in medicine as a whole as well as any
specific terms related to their chosen specialty.
Another very important topic that certainly earned its own topic is hospital safety. It
involves both safe practices as an individual provider; such as being aware of your surroundings
and possible hazards to you like needle sticks, violent patients etc. And using safe medical
techniques such drawing meds with the needle pointed away from you, wiping injection sites
down before injecting meds and wearing proper personal protective equipment. But also
following safe practices on a larger scale such as with incidents like gas leaks or terrorist attacks.

unreasonably interferes with the performance of a person's job or creates an intimidating, hostile,
or offensive work environment.
Overall, this class has helped me understood the rules and regulations associated in the
health field since I have chosen that field. In the nursing field, I will have the ability to comfort
the ill and dying and render help to the helpless. Also experience the thrill of helping a baby been
born,” that will be the most adorable experience ever “since I want to specialized to be a certified
nurse midwife.
