1. Personal Learning and Reflection 1.Reflection on what I have learnt from my front cover analysis2. Reflection on what I have learnt from my contents page analysis 3. Reflection on what I have learnt from my double page spread analysis4. Reflection on what I have learnt from my audience research
2. 1. Reflections on Front Cover Analysis Before starting this task I analysed many front cover pages of music magazines, this gave me lot of inspiration, I also learned a lot about codes and conventions of magazines.I noticed that the front cover layouts were different according to the music genre or artist that were presented. The other common point in every magazine was the size of the front cover photos and writing. Size was used to connote importance, dominant artists where presented with big pictures and big writing. Sometimes to emphasis this hierarchy of importance the portrait of the artist presented on the front cover was slightly covering the masthead. This gave the impression that the artist was more important than the magazine itself; or sometimes it even created a god like figure by taking the picture from a lower angle presenting the artist as dominant. Colours are also used a lot in magazine, most front covers had colours matching with either the genre or the photo of the artist. In the making of my front cover I will take all these factor for account, I will try to use this knowledge in the creation of my magazine front cover. I will show the hierarchy of importance by presenting my main artist by creating the front cover on a photo of this artist. Other supporting acts will be mentioned but no picture will be found on the cover. I will also play around with colours to create a link with different articles.
3. 2.Reflection on Contents Page Analysis In the research of this task I analysed 10 contents page to inform myself and learn about the different layout of content pages. The majority of content page in music magazine have photos relating to the different articles in the magazine. Many of those images had a page reference on them, this made it easier for the audience as it introduced them what they are interested in without any writing. Graphic images are a lot more useful to promote an article, therefore it presents articles much better than anything else. The content section with page reference showed short descriptions of the articles, but this content section is usually divided in chapters. To attract the reader’s attention those chapters were highlighted to create a colour clash. I will take this into account when creating my content page, and use the dominant colours of my magazine ( colour of masthead and front cover photo ) as a highlight colour for my different chapters. I also found out that many content page showed the option to subscribe, this offers cheaper deals. I will include something like this on my content page.
4. 3. Reflection on Double Page spread Analysis In my research and analysis of double page spread, I learned a lot about the different codes and conventions of magazines.I found out that many page spread use a certain layout to ensure that somewhere the reader’s eye instantly cross the article or picture they desire to show them. Many double page spread had there main photos on the right page, this means it is the first thing the readers see when they turn the page over.Another code and convention of double page spread in magazines are the drop caps in front of the body text. The first letter in the article is written in a bigger font, and sometimes and different colour. This attracts the reader’s attention, it also makes the article look more serious as drop caps are used in newspaper’s and other more intellectual texts. I will use this the making of my double page spread, as it makes the article look more professional.Quotes are also used in the main article and body text, quotes attracts reader's attention as it gives them a very brief idea of what the highlights of the texts are. In the making of my double page spread I will pull quotes and highlight them in some way to create a more realistic and professional look.
5. 4.Reflection on Audience Research Analysis I did audience research to find out who my potential target audience might be, and what there tastes would be like. I took a tests call “find your tribe” this showed me what kind of genre and stereotype I would fall into. I realised that I will be able to use this as a way of finding out what kind of different stereotypes might audience will fall into. I was inspirited in many genre and decided to create my magazine according to my target audience. Some of my friends also took to test as I wanted to know in what kind of stereotype people my age would fall into. I found that many teens my age would fall into the similar types of stereotype.I then created a questionnaire to find out what my target audience would be interested in. I found out that most people would spend very little on music magazine or even music itself, I also found out that this was due to free download, and news on internet. Therefore many people were interested in information about upcoming music events and related music stories such as tutorials. I will use this in the making of my magazine, my magazine will offer music tutorials and music tabs rather than gossip and news.
