2. All delegates will gain an
awareness of risks associated with
manual handling and of the
measure they must take to reduce
injury to both themselves and
others.
TI CMPP:LOAD 0070/09
3. identify legislation related to manual
handling
demonstrate ability to calculate the risk
level of a manual handling activity
basic understanding of biomechanics
practise principles of movement
TI CMPP:LOAD 0070/09
4. Can you identify with these
common causes of musculoskeletal
injury/pain?
Cumulative strain
Repetitive strain
One off incident?

TILEO Risk Assessment
Take a typical handling situation at
your place of work and
consider………….
TI CMPP:LOAD 0070/09
6. the Task
the Individuals Capability
the Load
the Environment
the Other factors, such as attire,
systems of work and equipment
TI CMPP:LOAD 0070/09
15. Biomechanics
The Muscles of the
back and abdomen
Provide stability for
the spine
Control spinal
movements
Protect the vertebral
coloumn
TI CMPP:LOAD 0070/09
17. Biomechanics
Mechanical loading of the spine
When upright load on spine arises mainly
from effects of gravity
When leaning forward tension in the back and
hips increases causing increased load on the
spine
When the trunk is horizontal loading on the
spine stems almost entirely from back muscle
tension-this can be calculated
TI CMPP:LOAD 0070/09
18. Biomechanics
When the trunk is horizontal
Centre of back muscles to centre of motion 5
to 6 cm
Lumbar Sacral disc to centre of upper body
mass 25 to 35cm
Leverage = 6 to1
For 30kg upper body mass = 180kg force
If you lift extra load of 30kg lifted in this
position force then =360kg
TI CMPP:LOAD 0070/09
20. Biomechanics
Static Loading causes a creep effect on
the discs – Kazarian (1975)
Therefore avoid holding even light
weights :-
For long periods
In a stooped position
Whilst leaning forward
At arms length CMPP:LOAD 0070/09

21. Biomechanics
Feet must be in the
correct position
Slightly apart an
offset
Pointing in the
direction of travel
Keep loads within the shaded area when handling
TI CMPP:LOAD 0070/09
22. Adopt and adapt the principles according
to you!
Stop and think
Keep close
Stable position
Avoid stooping
Use a secure hold
Avoid twisting
Lead with the head
Move smoothly
Vary positions

Hinweis der Redaktion
Advise that MHOR 1992 say that it is anything that uses hand or bodily force.
Does the task involve : holding loads away from the trunk twisting or stooping excessive reaching long carrying distances strenuous pushing or pulling unpredictable movement repetitive handling? Individual handler : Capability health problems disabilities pregnant special information training Is the load: heavy bulky/unwieldy difficult to grasp unstable/unpredictable strenuous pushing or pulling intrinsically harmful e.g. hot/sharp Environment are there : constraints on posture poor floors variations in levels hot/cold/humid conditions poor lighting conditions Other factors- do workers : find attire affects movement think there has been poor planning, scheduling, communication lack of training or information
Ask the groups to think about what they do outside of these limits.
Example legislation but other main ones are Management of Health & Safety at Work Reg’s 1999 MHSWR Manual Handling Operations Reg’s 1992 MHOR Reporting of Injuries & Dangerous Diseases Reg’s 1995 RIDDOR Lifting Operations & Lifting Equipment Reg’s 1998 LOLER
Ask the group to stand and feel muscles in own back then do slight stoop to fee the anchoring effect ( give health warning and demonstrate first.
Explain all about levers and other levers in the body, use your experience and examples of who you treat etc.
Have a go with chair push pull or handbag etc. (health warning again) ask them to watch you first. If they can’t then don’t
