- Because MA has had so much success over the years in benefitting from the use and purchase of EPPs, the current administration passed two key Executive Orders in recent years: The most recent is #515 which formally establishes an enviro purchasing policy for the state. So rather than just “encourage” the purchase of EPPs, agencies are now required to use and purchase EPPs wherever they are on state contract or otherwise available and competitive. If agencies are doing their own departmental contracts, they must use the specifications established by the EPP Program for those products. There is also a Task Force established in the EO that will assist agencies in identifying toxic substances in their purchases and consider alternatives. The earlier directive issued in 2004 focused specifically on energy and water conservation and established targets for the state for the purchase of renewable energy. Details on both are on the EPP Website that I will mention at the end
- Green Cleaning products may be a perfect place to start……. Several states have already adopted legislation that requires the use of these products in their schools and public buildings; MA has such legislation drafted and in the queue; so my suggestions is to get a jump on it now. The current contract FAC59 is awarded to 18 vendors, 22 manufacturers, and has literally 100’s of prods. Most items are 3rd party certified, including: All purpose, restroom, glass carpet, floor, hand soaps, appliance, boat/bilge, degreasers, liquid laundry, odor control, urinal blocks, vehicle cleaner Other less toxic products – disinfectants, hand and hard surface sanitizers + paper, liners, mats, equipment Why is the 3rd party certification a big deal? The independent third-party certification process practiced by organization such as Green Seal and EcoLogo not only assures purchasers that the environmental claims are accurate, but the certification also tests each product for performance and verifies the degree to which that the product will clean within the application for which it is intended. This is huge. This double assurance saves purchasers the time and expense of having to review and analyze the product’s chemistry and eliminates the need to “test” the products cleaning efficacy prior to awarding the contract.
