SOFT ANALYSIS
  By Marwa El- Ghaoubar
At the beginning of this shot there is diegetic sound of
the group of people shouting and running through the
little garden that reaches a dead end. A Tracking shot is
used to keep the audience well aware that they are
running to a specific place, in this case they are running
to see a fight. We can see that it daytime and we can also
see that the area that they are in is quiet, which is why
they may have taken a youth victim there to beat him up
as no one is there to help him out. The representation of
youth here is very negative.
This is a mid-shot of the bullies harassing a boy who is
similar to their age. The main bully is recognised as he is
the only one wearing white, which automatically tells the
audience which of the youths is the leader and which
one they may grow to hate due to him being a bad
character.it is ironic that he wears white since white
connotes purity. This may seem stereotypical as
teenagers are seen to be troublemakers in this case they
are represented badly to the society and community as
they just mess around. The sound is diegetic as all the
teenagers are shouting and swearing. The camera used
for these two shots was actually a hand held camera as
we can see a clear difference as the camera moves up
and down when they run and the image is blurry so you
can’t actually see what is happening properly.
This is an aerial shot of a street; the
houses belong to a middle class
area. A Jump cut is used to change
the shot when the teenager is being
beaten up and then we see a house;
we assume the action will also jump.
In this shot a teenager is going to go
downstairs; but as he hears the door
opening he runs back up in case his
dad sees his beaten up face. There is
diegetic sound of hard heavy base
music which is really loud; because
Most teenagers love to have their
music up pretty loud. There is a high
angle shot of the father entering the
house. We can also see the
teenager’s legs, as he tries to run to
his room. The father is wearing a suit
which indicates that he has a good
job. The man looks pretty tired as he
had a long hard working day at
work. There is also diegetic sound of
the man calling his son’s name
repeatedly; but not getting replies
back until later on; suggesting a
fractured relationship.
This is a long shot the teenagers
mucking around outside a shop. One
of the gang members is holding a
traffic cone and beat boxing on it
making it into a speaker so that
everyone could hear. The leader of
the gang is made to influence them
to do bad as they just do what he
says and they copy what he does.
This suggests fear in the society.
A Jump cut is used to jump from the
teenagers to the teenager’s dad; this
shows us that the man is near to the
bullies. There is a long shot as we
can see the background; the man is
seen to be overcrowded with
bushes. Which might be a symbol of
the crowd he will see in a minute
These two shots show that all the teenagers
are coming together to create a plan on what
they want to do, in this case they want to scare
a women who is walking past them. All the
teenagers are wearing hoodies; this is
stereotypical as they say those who wear
hoodies are badly representing themselves.
The teenagers are trying to cover up their
identity. There is diegetic sound of the
teenagers shouting and screaming at each
other “egging” each other on to start mischief.
The leader of the gang is too busy waiting for
the write moment to strike and scare the
women. He does a great job of doing so. The
woman screams and just walks on as she may
feel that she is outnumbered by the teens.
This shot is recorded on a phone; we
can see that the teenager has
attacked the man, kicking him in the
face. The man gets up and walks
away as he looks like he doesn’t
want trouble and that he is scared to
fight as there are a lot of them and
only one of him. After attacking the
man the teenager does his little
dance and starts laughing. There is
diegetic sound of people screaming
and cheering indicating a fight. They
also start calling him names and
trying to get him back to fight, but
he walks away. This shows the youth
to be vindicative.
Flashbacks are used to create
fear as the gang of youths seem
to be following him
home, suggesting danger.
This is a long shot showing all of the
teenagers trying to get snaps of the
man and the other teenage kid. They
all seem to be laughing at him and
calling him names trying to make
him feel nervous and scared. They
are also making the teenager feel
that he is a big person and that he is
stronger than anyone one around
him. The second shot show us the
teenagers trying to make the father
scared and so he hits him and starts
swearing at him telling that he can’t
be touching him. The boy then does
his usual dance and starts laughing;
but this time it’s a new ending. This
time the man son comes out
running. There is diegetic sound of
the car peeping as it’s been touched.
In this close up shot the teenager is
seen to have been hit by a cricket
bat. Scott comes running out to stop
the bullies and to get them to move
away and leave him alone so he
thought to take actions quickly as his
dad was a coward that he didn’t do
anything so he took his own matters
on board. The second shot shows us
a brutal attack that left the leader of
the gang bleeding. The teenagers
had all ran off when they saw the
cricket bat they all started screaming
and running and they left there
“friend” is beaten up. Scott showed
no remorse as they didn’t for him so
he thought the revenge was so
sweet. The location that they were
in was pretty a street view which is
where most teenagers stay. Creating
fear in the audience.
This is the shot that had begun the
short film and so it will also end the
film. This is a cyclical narrative
showing us that peace has been
restored.
