the	following	slides	we	will	go	over	this	pitch’s	structure	as	well	as	more	best	practices	for	pitching	consulting	services.	
The	purpose	of	our	company	posting	this	publically	is	to	help	anyone	interested	in	pitching	these	types	of	consulting	
services	get	a	better	idea	of	how	something	like	this	could	be	structured.

On	the	macro-level	a	pitch	is	nothing	more	than	1)	problem	and	2)	solution.	However,	depending	on	the	client	and	
the	type	of	services	you	are	pitching;	you	may	need	to	emphasize	on	the	benefits	or	help	the	client	understand	how	
big	of	a	problem	this	is	or	can	be	down	the	line.	You	also	need	to	explain	why	you	are	right	person	for	this	consulting	
project.	Last	but	not	least,	you	need	to	close.	If	you	are	not	closing	you	are	potentially	wasting	your	time.

PITCH	DECK	ANALYSIS:	DEFINE	PROBLEM/CHALLENGES
First	and	foremost	we	need	to	make	sure	that	the	client	is	1)	aware	of	the	problem	and	2)	understands	the	
seriousness	of	the	problem.	
• Money:	If	a	client	was	not	truly	aware	of	the	problem	it	will	be	difficult	to	get	them	from	the	awareness	
stage	to	the	closing	stage	in	one	single	meeting.	
• Time:	A	client	who	was	not	aware	of	their	problem	will	need	added	education	on	the	problem	which	costs	
time	and	may	delay	the	project.	The	client	may	seek	out	other	people’s	opinion	before	coming	back	to	you.	
• Headaches:	Clients	who	don’t	understand	what	work	is	involved	in	the	process	might	want	to	make	endless	
changes	on	a	website	which	makes	the	project	unprofitable.	
• Action:	If	the	client	doesn’t	understand	the	seriousness	of	the	problem	they	are	not	likely	to	take	
immediate	action.	You	need	to	make	sure	that	they	understand	both	the	short-term	and	long-term	
implications	of	not	addressing	the	problem.

Experience	is	certainly	important;	having	been	there	and	done	that.	However,	especially	in	an	fast	moving	industry	
like	web	development	it	is	critical	to	not	just	develop	expertise	but	stay	on	top	of	it.	Best	practices	are	a	moving	
target	and	it	can	be	challenging	to	become	a	master	of	your	craft	as	well	as	make	time	to	go	after	clients.	
Both,	experience	and	expertise,	can	be	proven	by	first	educating	the	client	and/or	assessing	their	own	level	of	
expertise	on	the	subject.	Being	transparent	proofs	not	just	trustworthiness	but	also	experience.	
At	Startup	Elite	we	proof	our	expertise	by	showing	our	clients	the	common	mistakes	in	web	development.	As	a	
small	boutique	shop	we	don’t	make	it	a	point	to	show	off	with	”Featured	Clients”	or	some	impressive	stats	like	
“Number	of	Clients	Served.”	As	a	company	we	have	that	and	we	can	easily	pull	up	a	website	and	show	the	client	
our	work	but	our	presentation	is	purposely	crafted	to	be	just	about	the	client	and	us	as	a	company.	This	way	the	
presentation	feels	more	organic	and	by	design	is	structured	to	be	interactive	with	plenty	of	dialog	instead	of	being	
an	one-way	communication.

PITCH	DECK	ANALYSIS:	CLOSING
There	is	a	saying	among	salespeople	called	“ABC”	which	stands	for	“Always	Be	Closing.”	While	we	don’t	entirely	disagree	
with	that	statement	you	have	to	keep	in	mind	that	every	pitch	does	not	just	have	the	sole	goal	to	close	but	to	make	a	
positive	impression	that	will	allow	you	to	build	a	relationship	with	that	potential	client	whether	they	are	signing	up	now,	
later	or	even	never.	Some	of	our	best	referrals	come	from	people	we	have	met	with	but	they	never	actually	became	a	
client	(probably	due	to	budgetary	reasons).	
As	a	startup	company	ourselves	who	specializes	in	helping	other	startups	grow	their	business	we	are	naturally	very	
passionate	about	every	single	project	which	shows	in	our	pitches	where	high	energy	and	positivity	sets	a	great	vibe	for	
the	working	relationship.	If	you	can	let	the	client	feel	that	not	only	are	they	doing	the	right	thing	but	they	are	doing	it	
with	the	right	people	that	is	truly	something	that	has	become	an	competitive	advantage	for	us.	
While	this	pitch	deck	is	named	“Basic	Business	Websites”	its	purpose	is	actually	to	sell	“Advanced	Business	Websites”	
but	”Basic”	doesn't’t	sound	scary	or	pricey	which	allows	us	to	setup	more	pitch	meetings.	We	don’t	consider	this	
unethical	because	we	gladly	sell	them	a	“Basic”	website	however	in	most	meetings	it	is	the	client	that	requests	to	talk	
about	the	more	advanced	features.	Which	makes	the	sales	process	easy	because	it	was	the	client’s	idea!

PITCHING	BEST	PRACTICES
• Know	the	Client:	No	matter	how	small	the	client	you	always	want	to	do	your	homework	and	understand	the	
client’s	website	objectives	(from	an	industry	best	practices	view)	before	the	client	steps	into	the	door.	
• Got	Numbers:	You	need	to	know	your	website	development	costs	on	the	spot	with	being	able	to	make	last	minute	
modifications,	otherwise	you	won’t	be	able	to	close	the	deal.	
• Always	Be	Honest:	Don’t	pretend	to	know	things	that	you	don’t.	You	can	sell	people	a	website	that	you	cannot	
build	because	you	can	outsource	it	and	be	of	value	to	the	client	from	a	project	management	standpoint	but	you	
have	to	be	upfront	about	that.	
• Pocket	Stories:	You	need	to	have	pocket	stories.	Depending	on	how	the	client	is	reacting	to	your	pitch	or	in	case	
you	get	lost	in	your	pitch	you	always	want	to	have	at	least	3-5	stories	handy	in	case	you	either	need	to	seem	more	
1)	personable	2)	get	their	attention	back	or	3)	just	to	kill	time	until	you	get	back	on	track.	
• Presentation	Style:	Read	the	room	and	adjust	your	presentation	style	to	the	client.	The	better	you	know	your	
materials	(and	your	craft)	and	the	more	often	you	have	practiced	the	more	confident	you	will	become.

FREQUENTLY	ASKED	QUESTIONS
Why	don’t	you	list	your	previous	clients	in	this	presentation	to	proof	experience?	
First,	the	pitch	is	designed	to	immediately	stimulate	a	dialog	with	the	client,	not	be	a	one-way	presentation.	
Secondly,	most	of	our	clients	come	from	a	referral	so	they	often	know	who	our	clients	are.	
Thirdly,	in	order	to	be	efficient	and	not	have	to	change	out	client	logos	every	month	we	decided	to	not	include	them.
Lastly,	because	most	of	our	clients	are	smaller	startups,	nobody	knows	them,	so	it	doesn't	add	any	value.		
Why	is	the	“About	Us”	slide	at	the	end	instead	of	the	beginning?	
First,	because	having	the	“About	Us”	in	the	beginning	would	set	the	vibe	of	an	one-way	communication.	
Second,	people	generally	know	who	we	are	(referral	network)	so	we	don’t	have	to	introduce	ourselves.	
Thirdly,	we	use	that	slide	at	the	end	not	to	read	it	off	but	explain	who	we	are	on	the	higher	level	which	essentially	is	
“entrepreneurs	helping	other	entrepreneurs	who	are	just	as	passionate	as	we	are	about	our	companies	which	means	
also	that	we	take	pride	in	our	work	and	always	do	our	best	given	the	resources	available	to	us.”
