EXECUTIVE JOB SEEKER
RETAIN A COACH?
Coaches are used by athletes and executives in order to
improve their performance on a tennis court or in a
board room. A qualified career coach will help you find
the right position faster utilizing a proven methodology.
Typically job seekers have rarely had to search. They
have no specific plan or accountability. There is no way
to measure progress or diagnose the problems and more
importantly what are the clear solutions to adjust your
campaign in order to increase progress.
Ask yourself the following questions?
Do you have a plan and know what you will be doing tomorrow, next Monday?

has their own unique way of helping a job seeker. This is one

Resumes, cover letters, web portfolio, etc.
 Step by step multi-pronged career marketing
campaign.
 Assess, track, evaluate and monitor
strategies, activities, progress and results.
Offer solutions.
 Maximize use of multiple networking
resources. Network with a purpose.
 Using Social Media effectively both to be
found by those seeking talent and to reach
the decision-makers who can hire you? 93

interviews. Appropriate follow up for next

While your coach is a key partner in this
process, you must assume responsibility
for your own success. Just like on the
football field, your coach is there to offer
guidance, strategies, helpful drills and
accountability. But if you really want to
score a touchdown, you are the one who
needs to complete the drills, run with
the ball and carry it triumphantly into
the end zone.
How to choose a career coach?
1. In NJ, a career coach/consultant must be insured, bonded and licensed by the Office of the
Attorney General – Division of Consumer Affairs.
2. Speak to former clients or check the LinkedIn profile of your coach and read client
recommendations. There is full disclosure on LinkedIn. Career coaches are fee based and a
recommendation is earned.
3. Check the BBB of NJ.
4. A written agreement of what is being provided is necessary.
Fees
Hourly
There are career coaches that charge by the hour. Fees can range from $75/hour to $300/hour and some ask for a multi-
session commitment.
Results Oriented
There are also coaches focused on outcomes, i.e., the client getting an attractive offer.
There may also be a success fee paid at the end of the process which incentivizes the coach to be sure you land a
position.
Meetings (face to face or phone) generally are once to twice a week however you can meet as frequently as needed.
Fees are retainer in nature to cover the ongoing relationship, not hourly. No limit to time and meetings.
The relationship would be for a sufficient number of months to accomplish this goal and include all the deliverables
necessary for a positive outcome.
Ask questions and be sure that you are clear about what you will getting for your money before you start work together

Retaining a Career Coach

  • 1. WHY SHOULD AN EXECUTIVE JOB SEEKER RETAIN A COACH?
  • 2. Coaches are used by athletes and executives in order to improve their performance on a tennis court or in a board room. A qualified career coach will help you find the right position faster utilizing a proven methodology. Typically job seekers have rarely had to search. They have no specific plan or accountability. There is no way to measure progress or diagnose the problems and more importantly what are the clear solutions to adjust your campaign in order to increase progress.

Ask yourself the following questions? Do you have a plan and know what you will be doing tomorrow, next Monday? Do you have goals and metrics in place to measure your progress? Are you at a loss to explain the lack of progress or, Do you have a clear sense of potential solutions to adjust your campaign and increase your rate of progress? Often people say, “I have to do something different. What I am doing is not working.”
  • 4. Career coaches offer a variety of services and deliverables. Each has their own unique way of helping a job seeker. This is one example. Deliverables:  Assess strengths, qualifications, accomplishments, liabilities and recommended solutions. Identify your unique value proposition.  Development of key marketing materials. Resumes, cover letters, web portfolio, etc.  Step by step multi-pronged career marketing campaign.  Assess, track, evaluate and monitor strategies, activities, progress and results. Offer solutions.  Maximize use of multiple networking resources. Network with a purpose.  Using Social Media effectively both to be found by those seeking talent and to reach the decision-makers who can hire you? 93 percent of recruiters/hiring managers review social media profiles before hiring a candidate.  Guide and prepare you to optimize interviews. Appropriate follow up for next round of interviews.  Develop an effective negotiating strategy.
  • 5. Rewards  Shorten the length of your job search. Time is money.  Increase the quality/quantity of the opportunities.  Diagnose the problems & liabilities and what are the clear solutions.  Keep you focused and accountable.  Setting goals and keep you motivated.  More about careers than just finding a job.  Skills acquired working with a career coach are utilized for a lifetime.  Job searching expenses are usually tax-deductible.   • 6. While your coach is a key partner in this process, you must assume responsibility for your own success. Just like on the football field, your coach is there to offer guidance, strategies, helpful drills and accountability. But if you really want to score a touchdown, you are the one who needs to complete the drills, run with the ball and carry it triumphantly into the end zone.
  • 7. How to choose a career coach? 1. In NJ, a career coach/consultant must be insured, bonded and licensed by the Office of the Attorney General – Division of Consumer Affairs. 2. Speak to former clients or check the LinkedIn profile of your coach and read client recommendations. There is full disclosure on LinkedIn. Career coaches are fee based and a recommendation is earned. 3. Check the BBB of NJ. 4. A written agreement of what is being provided is necessary.
  • 8. Fees Hourly There are career coaches that charge by the hour. Fees can range from $75/hour to $300/hour and some ask for a multi- session commitment. Results Oriented There are also coaches focused on outcomes, i.e., the client getting an attractive offer. There may also be a success fee paid at the end of the process which incentivizes the coach to be sure you land a position. Meetings (face to face or phone) generally are once to twice a week however you can meet as frequently as needed. Fees are retainer in nature to cover the ongoing relationship, not hourly. No limit to time and meetings. The relationship would be for a sufficient number of months to accomplish this goal and include all the deliverables necessary for a positive outcome. Ask questions and be sure that you are clear about what you will getting for your money before you start work together
