2. DIALOGUE FAILURE
Environmentalist rhetoric often too doomsday
& elitist
Expects everyone to be motivated by abstract,
easily misconstrued data
Open body language not utilized fully
More persuasive than words themselves
Needs to speak to common values
3.
4. BEGIN WITH COMMON GROUND
First, connect emotionally.
Enter their perspective.
People are more likely to listen to and
understand someone who can empathize with
them
Helpful to look into decision-makers’
upbringing, past decisions, & interests to find
where you intersect
5.
6. COMMON GROUND
While realistic, keep your message positive,
what can be gained (rather than what will be
otherwise lost)
More permanent, high-paying jobs
Less pollution, more resources
Better civic health
Energy independence
7.
8. WORKSHOP
Lobby “a Republican” regarding an issue:
climate change, minimum wage, etc.
Connect emotionally
Find common ground, trust by sharing your own
relatable story
Speak to their values, how your story is also
theirs
Work them through how their actions might
contradict your common values
Have a call-to-action, & stay friends!
