This presentation contains part of my book entitled "Reading and Writing Skils in the 21st Century Learners" which I shared in one of ISTAR's International Conference and DepEd National Reading Month in 2021.

• Teaching reading and writing in
Distance Learning Modality
• a. Modular Distance Learning
(MDL), and
• b. Online Distance Learning (ODL).

4. Distance Learning
•This refers to a learning delivery
modality where learning takes
place between the teacher and
the learners who are
geographically remote from each
other during instruction.

5. Types of Distance
Learning
1. Modular Distance Learning (MDL)
• Involves individualized instruction that
allows learners to use self-learning
modules (SLMs) in print or digital
format/electronic copy, whichever is
applicable in the context of the learner,
and other learning resources like
Learner’s Materials, textbooks, activity
sheets, study guides and other study
materials.

2. Online Distance Learning (ODL)
• Features the teacher as facilitator,
engaging learners’ active participation
through the use of various technologies
accessed through the internet while they
are geographically remote from each
other during instruction.

3. TV/Radio-Based Instruction.
• TV/Radio-Based Instruction utilizes Self-
learning Modules (SLMs) converted to
video lessons for Television-Based
Instruction and SLMs converted to radio
script for Radio-Based Instruction.

8. Facts about Reading
and Writing
1. Critical reading and effective writing
are underrated skills.
2. Reading nonfictional texts and
reference materials and writing
academic papers and professional
correspondence are tedious and not
even worthwhile.

9. HOW?
1. Look for materials for teaching content.
2. Look for delivery that aims to develop
student’s interest in reading and writing
which in turn will help enhance their
critical reading, critical thinking, and
reasoning skills.
3. Moreover, materials like books or even
ebook, that will be able to acquire the
knowledge and skills in reading and
writing.

• Evaluates the students’ prior
knowledge regarding the topic to be
discussed and/or builds their interest
in the lesson.

century skills.

55. Conclusion
In this new normal, innovation in eduction is
encouraged. Students and teachers needs to
conduct research, explore, and use all the tools to
uncover new perspective.
The more you teach your students to read and write
through different platforms and digital learning
activities and games, the more you broaden their
vocabulary and are able to articulate concepts
accurately and more effectively to others. Increasing
their ability to communicate also helps make them a
better student. Find books with learning content that
is aligned with the curriculum standard.
