HELLO!
I am Dr. Maria Martha
Manette A. Madrid
I am here because I love to
give presentations.
1
Embracing the
New Normal as
Teachers
WE WILL TALK ABOUT…
▪ How to teach in the new normal
▪ How to conduct research in the
new normal
▪ Ways to teach in an online
environment and in a blended
course 3
“▪ How many schools and
universities would invest in a
technology that would assists
both teachers and students
grappling with the new
normal?
▪ Are the resources and
materials readily available?
▪ Would there be adequate
trainings for teachers?
4
Things that are lacking in the virtual world
▪ Missing the talk of the physical classroom, looking
at my students all at once,
▪ Hearing students' reactions to an important
perception or even a joke,
▪ Engaging in discussions and in friendly exchange
of remarks,
▪ Sensing students' reaction to lessons through
their body movements, and
▪ Observing the wide-eyed, weary and bored.
5
6
MY JOB
I need to “connect my students
to one another in a way that
enables them not only to learn
from one another, but also to
catch life experiences from one
another — to shape one
another in the way that only
peers can.
-“A Letter to Educators Teaching Online for the First
Time,” Reshan Richards and Stephen Valentine, March
13, 2020
Embracing
the Challenge
7
▪ Embrace and acquire
the knowledge and
skills on technology
that would establish
connection and
interaction at a
different level toward
a rich learning
environment.
Today’s teachers will have to:
Master meeting
applications, like Zoom
and Google Meet, is not
simple. Learn learning
management systems,
like Canvass and
Moodle, Quipper,
BeSMart, Schoology,
Genyo.
8
How about
Assessment?
9
What is teaching in the New Normal?
▪ Teaching in
the new
normal must
allow students
to be engaged
and/or
involved. 10
▪ The challenge to
teachers is to make the
instructional design
(learning experiences
and materials) relevant,
meaningful,
memorable,
motivational and, in the
end, measurable.
What is teaching in an Online Environment?
First, if the
content is not
meaningful to
the individual,
the learner
will have
trouble
maintaining
focus.
Second,
learning
activities
must leave a
lasting
imprint or be
memorable
to the
learner. 11
Dr. Michael Allen
has described
four elements
that will
contribute to
effective
instructional
design.
What is teaching in an Online Environment?
12
Third,
learners
must have
the
motivation
to learn, or
they won’t.
Fourth, he or she
talks about
measurably
improved
performance that
produces the
needed results.
What is Teaching Method?
13
Refers to the
general principles,
pedagogy and
management
strategies used for
classroom
instruction.
Teaching theories
into categories
based on a teacher-
centered approach,
student-centered
approach, and high-
tech approach to
learning.
Teacher-Centered Approach to Learning
▪ Teachers are the main authority figure in
a teacher-centered instruction model.
▪ Students passively receive knowledge
from their teachers through lectures and
direct instruction.
14
Student-Centered Approach to Learning
▪ Teachers are still an authority figure in a student-
centered teaching model, but teachers and
students play an equally active role in the learning
process.
▪ The teacher’s primary role is to coach and
facilitate student learning and overall
comprehension of material, and to measure
student learning through both formal and informal
forms of assessment, like group projects, student
portfolios, and class participation.
15
High Tech Approach to Learning
▪ The high tech approach to learning utilizes
different technology to aid students in their
classroom learning.
▪ Many educators use computers and tablets
in the classroom, and others may use the
internet to assign homework. The internet is
also beneficial in a classroom setting as it
provides unlimited resources. 16
Some tech tools used in classrooms today:
▪ G Suite External link (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Classroom, Drive,
and Calendar)
▪ Tablets/laptops
▪ Gamification software (such as 3DGameLab External
link and Classcraft External link )
▪ Education-focused social media platforms (such
as schoology External link and seesaw External link )
▪ Technology accessibility External link for students with
disabilities
17
Ways to teach in the New Normal
18
1. Utilize or make use of interactive
platforms and games.
- Virtual video platforms like Zoom,
Google Meet and Hangouts, and Webex
that allow teachers to connect with their
class at once to provide more engaging,
effective online delivery of instruction.

How about Online
Learning Activities
for Blended Courses?
24
25
Ways to teach in the New Normal
26
2. Facilitate or promote discussions
and collaboration.
-Engage or involve students in group
discussions to build collaboration and
communication skills.
If your classroom is fully virtual, consider
27
1. Use the
Breakout
rooms on your
virtual
platform.
If your classroom is fully virtual, consider
28
2. Use
Online Discussion
Forum where students
can express and
share ideas, including
data gathering and
research
presentation. It can be
livestream or use the
chat box.
If your classroom is fully virtual, consider
29
3. Utilize
Focused Group
Discussion(FGD)
or Individual
Interview for
Qualitative
Research.
If your classroom is fully virtual, consider
30
4. Use Google
Survey for
Quantitative
Research .
If your classroom is fully virtual, consider
31
5. Use Closed
Captions.
Ways to teach in the New Normal
32
3. Make time for socio-emotional
learning.
-Help your students process this shared
experience, teachers must engage in
activities that promote socio-emotional
learning.
HOW?
Weekly journal assignments
that builds writing skills and
serve as a way for teachers to
check in with their students’
emotional state.
Dramatic poetry that allows the
students to narrative or tell a
story which is normally spoken
from their point of view.
Consider the following questions for students
to start a social and emotional learning at school:
▪ What is a
perfect day for
you?
▪ For what in
your life do
you feel most
happy?
▪ What is your
favorite
movie? Who is
your favorite
actor or
actress?
▪ What does
friendship
mean to you?
▪ Describe
something that
makes you
angry. How do
you deal with
it?
▪ How do you
have fun and
relax?
34
Ways to teach in the New Normal
35
4. Teachers must be available and
flexible.
-Take the time to check in with each
student to provide a safe learning
environment for them to express
their feelings and emotions.
-Provide flexible deadlines as
needed.
Ways to teach in the New Normal
36
5. Prioritize and plan your own self-
care.
-A positive, good and effective
healthy self-care strategy can include
activities that address physical,
psychological, emotional, spiritual,
social, and professional factors
every day.
Quick activities that almost any teacher can
incorporate into their daily lives to de-stress:
37
1
3
5
4
2
Plan, Arrange and
Schedule your daily
breaks—ten to twenty
minutes a day
Make positive self-talk
exercises and affirmations
like I can do it, I'm good
enough, If I want to, I can,
It doesn't matter if I make a
mistake etc.
Practice deep
breathing
exercises and
mindfulness.
Seek and find social
support from fellow
teachers, friends and
even your deans/
heads
Organize,
organize,
organize! Create
and plan your
to-do lists
IN CONCLUSION
▪ First, Techers must be technologically
empowered;
▪ Second, Teachers must embrace their
journey being a responsible, creative and
tech-savvy members of the academe.
▪ Finally, Teachers must maximize their time
and allow themselves to become productive
in different aspects of their personal and
professional life.
