Energy is the capacity of an object for doing a
work.
Energy can be measured in two kinds of
different units:
- Joules (J) 1 cal = 4.18 J.
-Calories (cal)
Types of energy
Mechanical energy: there are two
types of these kind of energy:

-Kinetic energy: is the energy that
objects posses when they are
moving. Ej: roller coaster
                                       Kinetic energy

-Potential energy: is the energy
that objects have when they move
from their state of equilibrium.

                                      Potential energy
Ty p e s o f
            e ne rg y
Electrical energy: these is associated to an
electric current. It makes machines which need an
electrical source work. Ej:a radio

Electromagnetic energy: it is transported by
electromagnetic waves. Ej: Luminous energy.
Ty p e s o f e n e r g y

Sound energy: It is produced in the form of
sound waves and it is transmited through
vibrations.
TYPES OF ENERGY
Chemical energy: It can be released or absorbed
in the time it is suffering chemical processes.

                  Chemical energy as plants making
                  photosyntesis

Nuclear energy: It is stored in the nuclei of atoms
it is also released in nuclear reactions.
Types of energy
Thermal or calorific energy: When particles
vibrate in matter energy is produced. These
energy is measured in temperature.

                  We use a thermometre to
                  measure temperature
ENERGY SOURCES
An energy source is any natural resource that
provides different types of energy, it can be
used in different ways depending on its
purposes. There are two types of energy
sources: non-renewable and renewable energy
sources
 Examples:

  Wind Sunlight Water
NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY
         SOURCES

Are those energy sources which can run out.

Nuclear energy: it is stored in the nuclei of atoms.
These are released in two kinds of reactions

-Nuclear fission

-Nuclear fusion
NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY
         SOURCES
Coal:

There are two types of coal mines:
Open cast mines: where coal is extracted in the
surface of the earth.
Underground mines: where the mineral is
extracted under the surface of the earth.

                                       miners
NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY
         SOURCES
Petroleum
It's a source of energy that is found
underground it's extracted by oil rigs. Its
derivates are:
-Liquid fuels (Petrol and diesel)
-Liquiefied gases (Methane, ethane and
butane)
-Fuel oil
-Light components (Vaseline)
-Heavy components (Paraffin)

                               A fuel station
NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY
         SOURCES

Natural gas: it is formed from descomposed
plants and animals most of natural gas is found
underground. It is used to produce thermal energy.

Natural gas is used for gas cookers
RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES
Renewable energy sources come from natural
  resources which are unlimited.

Hydraulic energy: This energy comes from the
movement made by the pass of the water in
  dams.

Water movement is transform
into mechanical energy
RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES
Solar energy: this energy comes from sunlight,
although the sun is a star and some day it
would disappear we conssider it to be a
 renewable energy source.
Solar energy is catched by photovoltaic solar
 cells and transformed into electricity

                                  Photovoltaic solar cells
RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES
Wind energy: it is used to move wind turbines
 which transform mechanical energy into
 electrical energy.

Marine energy: it can be extracted from tides,
 waves and sea temperature.

Wind turbines Ocean thermal energy plant
RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES
Other types of renewable energy sources are:

Geothermal energy.

Biomass.
                             Geothermal power
                             station

Municipal solid waste.
ENVIROMENTAL IMPACT
Greenhouse effect: when we burn fuels we
produce carbon dioxide these gas doesn´t allow
sunrays to get out of the earth atmosphere
    producing the greenhouse effect.

                                              Co2

                                        Co2
The poles melt with high temperatures
ENVIROMENTAL IMPACT
Acid rain: this is a type of rain
 contaminated by pollution.
Oil spills: when petrolleum is
realeased to the ocean as an
 accident.
Nuclear waste: it is radioactive and
harmful for living beings. Sea birds suffer the
                                       impact of oil spills
Water temperature: thermal power
 station increased the temperature
of water, and this is dangerous
Energy Power Stations
In power stations water is heat to very high
temperatures and water vapour is produced.
This water vapour moves turbines wich convert
  mechanical energy into electricity.

                            An energy power station.
WIND TURBINES
Wind turbines usually produced renewable
energy, but now a French company discovered
a new function for these structures.
This company has modified the traditional wind
turbine so it can also manufactured drinking
water with humid air. They say that the next step
will be to create turbines which provided water
to cities.

 A new wind turbine
WIND TURBINES
The technology works by generating
electricity in the traditional way of wind
turbines.
The water generated is purified and filtered
before it's used or consumed.
