PRO BONO DOORWAYS LETTER
1. Dear Sir or Madam:
Attention needs to be called to the serious epidemic that is domestic violence. Doorways for Women and
Families is a non-profitorganization in theArlington, Virginia area thatwas established to address this
unfortunately growing issue. We area resourcethat women and families can useto escapeabusivepartners and
homes by providingthem the means to obtain protective orders, providingrapid re-housingprograms, find safe
shelter for themselves and their children,as well as providing financial aid and budgetingprograms. These
programs are all designed to guide the domestic violence survivor through the court system, as well as make the
general transition easier for the whole family.Accordingto the National Coalition AgainstDomestic Violence, one
in four women will experiencedomestic violencein her lifetime, and an estimated 1.3 million arevictims of
physical assaultby their partners each year; the goal of these programs is to reduce these climbing numbers.
We providelegal aid services for thosewho cannotafford to pay for a privatelawyer for cases concerning
child support, custody, and protective orders. They are referred to legal aid if they do not possess the financial
means to fund a privatelawyer’s services.
Problems for the survivors arisewhen our legal aid services no longer have the means, staff, time to be
ableto take on all the cases thatare referred to them, or they simply do not have the knowledge needed to deal
with the complicated cases thatarisedue to domestic violence. This is where we are requesting help from
experienced attorneys likeyourselves, who have both the knowledge and level of compassion thatwe arelooking
for in a team. We are lookingto recruitfirms to take on one or two pro bono cases per year, in the hopes that it
would take some of the pressureoff of our legal aid team.
This would allowour legal aid team to be ableto work cases more effectively. It would also provide
valuableexperienceto newly barred attorneys, and keep more experienced attorneys in constant and efficient
practice. They can experience the atmosphere of a courtroom firsthand, and build a rapportwith valuableand
future clients.Attorneys that work pro bono cases for Doorways will beprovided an immeasurableamount of
opportunities to publicizetheir firms in tandem with helpingindividualswho have an otherwise poor quality of life.
Attorneys that acceptpro bono cases areensuringthat every individual has equal access to the legal system, and
also promote the idea that justiceis notjusta concept that can be bought and sold, supportingthe social contract
between lawyers and society.Accordingto Rule 6.1, provided by the American Bar Association, lawyers should
aspireto designate 50 hours of their time to pro bono service;imaginehow many families could beliberated from
their abusivesituationsrightnowif you only chooseto devote even a few hours of your time.
Thank you for your time, consideration and compassion.
Sincerely,
Margaret O’Brien
