The Universal Studios Islands of Adventure theme park in Orlando, Florida underwent a lighting design project. Key areas that received lighting design included the iconic architecture, waterfront areas, and a popular summer show called Mistify that uses walls of water as screens for projected films surrounded by fountain and fire effects. The lighting design for Mistify has been well-received in its fifth season at the park.
2. HOSPITALITY Mandarin Oriental HotelWashington, DC At an estimated cost of $144 million, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Washington, become the first 5-Star facility in the Portals district. Catering to the elite business traveler, this Beaux Arts style, 400-room hotel offers impressive views of the Potomac tidal basin, the Jefferson Memorial and the Washington Monument. Steeped in luxury, it includes a highly acclaimed 14,000 square-foot spa along with a 24,000 square-foot conference facility and two award-winning restaurants. In concert with the hotel group’s tradition, the building incorporates distinctively oriental architecture and design elements. The Mandarin Oriental Washington also focuses on a theme of the elements: Earth is represented by the terraced garden, Air by the kite installation above the swimming pool, Water by the marina itself and Fire is a feature incorporated in the CityZen restaurant’s open exhibition kitchen. 6. CORPORATE Sovereign Tower Atlanta, ga An architectural marvel that soars 635 feet into the skyline, Sovereign is a 50-story high-rise tower on Peachtree Road in the Buckhead district of Atlanta. With 600,000 square feet of retail, restaurant and office space, this mixed-use urban designed project was designed by Atlanta-based Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart and Stewart and has won numerous accolades including a 2009 ULI Development Excellence Project of the Year award. CD+M provided architectural lighting design of the site, residential and office lobbies, 28th floor residential club and pool deck and façade. Custom poles located at the street level feature twin 4,000 watt spotlights which prominently light the south façade of the building which can be seen from more than 10 miles distance. 7. CORPORATE Volkswagen Glaserne Manufactur dresden, Germany The $190 million Glaserne Manufactur, or ‘Glass Factory,’ in Dresden, Germany, is a visual celebration of modern manufacturing. In the words of the architect, Gunter Henn, this is a “master craftsman’s atelier” with parquet floors, transparent glass walls, water features and an 80-foot wide sphere featuring a multimedia show by BRC Imagination Arts. In the atrium, City Design Group designed a system of theatrical trusses and lighting to support a variety of uses. CDG provided exhibit and specialty lighting, facility lighting consulting provided by Kardoff Ingenieure. The venue aims to give its visitors a hands-on and highly entertaining look at the craftsmanship of the Volkswagen brand through six attractions, including a “virtual test drive” motion simulator, a real-time “earth observatory,” and a touch screen exhibit that enables visitors to design a dream car then print its brochure, including the user’s own photo likeness next to the car. EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA – EAST VILLAGE DINING FACILITY ATHENS, GA A new concept in dining at the University of Georgia in Athens, the East Village Dining Facility features casual seating areas, a retail store, café and a modern servery in a variety of warm and comfortable finishes. The barrel vault ceiling is prominently featured at the center of The building and provides a gathering place for both the common areas below and the dining areas above. The dining area is part of UGA’s new East Village community, which also includes a student center and 1200- bed housing complex. The project was awarded a 2005 IIDA Award of Merit in Lighting Design. HOSPITALITY The Queen Victoria The second largest ship built by the prestigious Cunard line features seven restaurants, 13 bars and three swimming pools, in addition to an ornately decorated, three-story Grand Lobby, highlighted with mahogany and marble. Most lighting throughout the ship is warm white to accentuate the rich finishes, especially the sumptuous stone and wood flooring. ENTERTAINMENT & LEISURE STAR CITY CASINO SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA Enjoying sweeping views of Sydney Harbor and the city skyline, the $750 million Star City Casino comprises four separate themed gaming areas, a variety of restaurants and bars, two performing arts facilities, a residential condominium complex and a towering rockwork feature complete with a 40 meter waterfall and flame effects. This Las Vegas-style resort casino is the sole licensee in the city of Sydney and draws visitors from throughout the Pacific Rim and beyond. RESTAURANT & BAR Ginkgo Restaurant Chengdu, PRC The owners of Gingko Restaurant in Chengdu, one of China’s fastest growing cities, retained CD+M to support in intricate, technical designs of Beijing-based design architect GRAFT. A surrealistic blend of traditional still life paintings and contemporary western textures and textiles, Gingko’s ingenious design plays on space and depth, heightening the senses. Plush seating, exceptional food and intimate lighting combine at Gingko to create an ultimate Chinese dining atmosphere. The project was awarded a 2008 IIDA Award of Merit in Lighting Design. MASTERPLAN Taiyuan cbd master plan taiyuan, prc A strong theme of ancient Chinese architecture, the “dougong”, has been incorporated into the custom design of the light poles used on Changfeng Street. Eight 150 watt metal halide lights have been integrated into the structure, enclosed in a highly efficient prefabricated housing that will direct the light to where it is needed without much light pollution or waste. Calculations were performed to ensure the number of light fixtures used on the poll would create an illumination level that would meet the national standard of 20 – 30 lux on the road surface (we have achieved an average of 25 lux). ENTERTAINMENT & LEISURE Happy Magic WatercubeBeijing, prc The iconic facility Beijing’s famous ‘Water Cube’ for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games was recently retrofitted to hold a massive indoor water park known as the “Happy Magic Watercube” Once inside the amazing structure, guests are be immersed in the world's largest indoor water park, with giant funnels, interactive jelly fish and China’s first ever AquaLoop. All the details have been designed to match each other; theatrical lighting, the iconic architecture and glass mosaics which work together to transport guests to a new world. Lauderdale, fl Wannado City, the first role-playing theme park for children in the United States, empowers kids by letting them take on realistic, grown-up roles in a city just for them. The project features kid-sized police and fire stations, a theater, recording studio, beauty salon and many other activities all designed to ignite the imagination. Located in Ft. RETAIL The EThel M Chocolate Superstore, m&m Academy Thuwal, KSA A mixture of film, retail, live action and whimsy, the M&M’s Academy at the Showcase Mall in Las Vegas offers guests an opportunity to experience the creation of the world-famous M&M’s candies. This branded attraction features a 3D film by Will Vinton Studios, creator of the popular M&M’s candy television commercials, and a walk-through experience which delights kids young and old. City Design Group provided lighting design and controls specifications for the Academy and the fourth-floor retail and café area under contract to Cunningham Group Architects and attraction designer Landmark Entertainment. PUBLIC Beijing Olympic Green beijing, PRC In 2007, CD+M participated in an invited, international competition to develop a complete architectural and lighting design solution for these iconic media towers, placed on the Beijing Olympic Green between the National Stadium and the Aquatics Center. Standing 30 meters above the 2008 Beijing Olympic Green, our media tower concept fused glass, metal and lighting around the symbology of Taijitu, more commonly known as Yin-Yang - the cornerstone for Taoism and traditional Chinese medicine. ENTERTAINMENT & LEISURE Seaworld Orlando Orlando, FL Mistify is a fantasy experience of film, water and special effects that unfold in the lake just offshore from the Waterfront expansion area at Seaworld Orlando. Guests watch along the shore as hundred-foot-tall walls of water serve as screens on which the film is projected, surrounded by dancing arrays of fountain jets, flames and fireworks shooting skyward. The Meydan offers 285 rooms and suites with balconies directly overlooking the racetrack, including one Royal Suite, and two Presidential Suites. 24. MASTERPLAN City of Lights Master Plan abu dhabi, UAE The City of Lights on Al Reem Island is a breathtaking community set amidst a verdant, waterfront oasis. Draped across 101 acres of land, the area will include commercial and residential properties, including hotels, offices, retail space and residential accommodation. Towers will be built along a waterfront promenade and be interlinked by lush, landscaped plazas with signature clusters of date palms. World-class shopping and dining establishments will line the waterfront, which will offer an array of water-based activities and sports. ENTERTAINMENT & LEISURE Universal Studios Island of adventure ORLANDO, FL Universal Studios Islands of Adventure Theme Park opened in Orlando in 1999 and comprises six themed areas, each containing shops, restaurants and attractions. Inviting its guests to “Live the Adventure,” the park begins with the dramatic Port of Entry, followed by Seuss Landing, the Lost Continent, Jurassic Park, Toon Lagoon and Marvel Superhero Island. Ted Ferreira was among a team of lighting designers on the project and contributed to the design of site lighting, pre-construction negotiation and specifications for the parkwide lighting control system, among the most technologically advanced in the world. 27. RETAIL Eric Paris Salon Beijing, PRC CD+M recently collaborated with GRAFT to expand the Eric Paris Salon in Beijing. The Eric Paris line was founded by world-renowned stylist Eric, who rose to fame as the owner of Studio 54, the largest chain of salons in the South of France. As the premier stylist for China’s high fashion industry, Eric Paris Salon is recognized for innovative styles and a luxurious environment. Located in the Kerry Center in Beijing, the expanded salon spans more than 3,200 square feet over three stories and boasts a color palette ranging from clean, chic whites to sensuous, fingernail reds. 28. PUBLIC Dagu Bridge Tianjin, PRC Completed in the spring of 2004, the Dagu Bridge is a new six-lane auto and pedestrian thoroughfare crossing the Haihe River in Tianjin, China. Conceptualized by Man-Chung Tang of T.Y. Lin International, the Dagu Bridge reflects a concept of the sun, moon and stars. Located in the center of Tianjin’s redevelopment area, the bridge is one of the first projects to emerge as part of the city’s major redevelopment plan. Bridge Architect: T.Y. RETAIL Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace Las Vegas, NV The Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace is Las Vegas’ premier retail, dining and entertainment destination, featuring more than 160 boutiques and shops as well as 13 restaurants and specialty food shops. Through continual progress, The Forum Shops have maintained a position as the most successful shopping venue in the nation. Completed in 2004, the most recent expansion to The Forum Shops added 175,000 square feet of luxury shopping and extended the property out to Las Vegas Boulevard, where a new grand pedestrian plaza creates a remarkable entrance. The three-level addition includes an array of upscale shops and several new restaurants, as well as a spiral escalator -- one of only two in the United States. PERFORMING ARTS VENUE Cobb Performing Arts Center Atlanta, GA On September 15, 2007, the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre became the first major arts facility to open in the Atlanta area in more than 40 years and serves as the new home of The Atlanta Opera.As the architectural lighting consultant for this $145 million project, CD+M developed a custom lighting concept that enhanced the dramatic and opulent design envisioned by Atlanta architects Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart & Associates, Inc. The state-of-the-art facility includes a 2,750-seat theatre, a special event space, 1,000 parking spaces, full-service food and beverage capabilities and rehearsal facilities. With the facility’s ground-breaking in January 2005 and a grand opening only two and a half years later, the design and construction teams completed this impressive project on time and under budget, a rare accomplishment for a major performing arts center. EDUCATION CWRU Weatherhead Graduate School of Management Cleveland, oh The building’s façade follows Frank Gehry’s distinctive sculptural approach to building design, which utilizes curvaceous structures, intersecting forms and reflective metal. Equally unconventional, the school’s interior features intimate spaces within a soaring interior and circulation paths designed to encourage interaction between students and faculty. MUSEUMS & VISITOR’S CENTERS Ford Rouge Visitor Center Dearborn, MI The Ford Rouge Factory Tour is a multimedia museum which introduces guests to the history of the Ford Motor Company using state-of-the-art projection systems, theatrical effects and a vintage collection of classic Ford cars. The facility received the 2004 Themed Entertainment Association award for Best Visitors Center and was certified LEED Gold by the USGBC, one of only 20 such projects in the U.S. in 2004. PUBLIC Georgia State Capitol Atlanta, GA In renovating the Georgia State Capital, the project leaders wanted to achieve color consistency and to make the variety of architectural details visible at night. Overcoming the challenges of close neighboring buildings, enormous trees and even a helicopter flight path, we realized a design that enhances the architectural detail, highlights the shining gold domes and illuminates the once-lost statue at the monument’s crown. PERFORMING ARTS VENUE House of BluesDallas, tx An anchor in the 75-acre, $3 billion+ Victory Park urban development area, the club includes a 1,625 seat music hall, a 400 person capacity restaurant which features distinctive Southern-inspired cuisine, unique décor built upon one of the largest collections of world-culture inspired folk art in the US, and the Foundation Room, House of Blues’ exclusive membership lounge, entertainment and fine-dining space. HOSPITALITY Hyatt Regency O’Hare Chicago, IL CD+M collaborated with leading design firm The Johnson Studio to create two exciting new dining facilities in the $60 million renovation of the Hyatt O’Hare in Chicago. The elegant O’H Restaurant features graceful tree sculptures of metal, light and glass and Red, the new premium sports bar and lounge, features an elegantly curved bar, plush leather seats, plasma television screens and video projectors. HOSPITALITY Inn of the Mountain Gods MESCALERO, NM Marc Rosenberg, with architect and interior designer Worth Group, designed the Inn of the Mountain Gods resort and casino, which opened in March 2005. Situated high in the picturesque mountains of Mescalero, New Mexico, just outside of Ruidoso, the upscale property features 250 guest rooms, 26 suites, 38,000 square-feet of gaming space, 40,000 square feet of convention space and several restaurants. The resort’s dazzling lobby features a two- story panoramic window, as well as natural materials and warm tones that bring the understated luxury of the resort into harmony with its breathtaking surroundings. Owned and operated by the Mescalero Apache Tribe, the resort is the second largest employer in Otero County and has made great contributions to the economy of the reservation and neighboring communities. 38. HOSPITALITY M resort Las Vegas, Nv Encompassing more than 90 acres of prime real estate, M Resort is the latest addition to the glittering Las Vegas skyline. CD+M developed a lighting plan for the resort’s interior and exterior spaces - including a full-service spa, casino, nine restaurants and five bars - using a wide variety of modern technology to create color- changing coves and glowing, rear-illuminated panels. HOSPITALITY Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino Las Vegas, Nv Built upon the former Aladdin Casino on the heart of the Las Vegas Strip, the new Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino offers guests an opportunity to immerse themselves in a retro- chic world of Hollywood and celebrity culture. The elegant and visually sumptuous new property features floor-to-ceiling Swarovski crystal chandeliers at the casino entry lobby, 2,600 movie-themed rooms and suites, high definition plasma screens in each room and on the casino floor, award winning restaurants, a 7,000 seat theatre and a 1,500 seat showroom for high-end Las Vegas entertainment. HOSPITALITY McAllen Convention Center Mcallen, TX The new 175,000 square-foot McAllen Convention Center is the centerpiece of a large mixed-use retail, exhibition and arts master plan, designed by Atlanta-based Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback and Associates (TVSA), in partnership with Corpus Christi-based Gignac & Associates. CD+M Lighting Design Group designed lighting for all of the interior public spaces and exterior site, including the exhibition hall, main and prefunction lobbies, ballroom, meeting rooms and boardrooms. Located in the Rio Grande valley near the border to Mexico, the center serves as an important commercial keystone in this fast-growing city. HOSPITALITY – IN-PROGRESS Hard rock hotel Abu Dhabi, UAE Hard Rock Hotel Abu Dhabi will be furnished to meet international five-star deluxe standards, incorporating Hard Rock’s tradition of providing luxury, quality service and amenities. The hotel will contain destination dining venues, all-day restaurants and high-energy bar locations, offering both locals and hotel guests a place to see and be seen. An extensive media facade will encompass 3 sides of the building and feature interactive displays, hi-resolution playback and subtle movement at all hours of the night. In collaboration with Interior Designers Heitz Parsons Sadak and Local Design Institute Zinta in the PRC, CD+M has designed a unique lighting environment with modern sophistication scheduled to open in 2011. 46. HOSPITALITY – IN-PROGRESS Hilton Riyadh Riyadh, Saudi Arabia The lighting approach for the façades of the Hilton Riyadh Hotel and Residences is multi- faceted. The hotel tower’s unique reveals are gently illuminated to highlight the vertical features, and distinguish it from the residential tower. In comparison, the horizontal rainscreens on the residential tower conceal a soft up-down glow. These two buildings are united using other lighting techniques, such as a vertical wash of key building façades, a continuous linear blue accent at the parapet of each building, and at the podium, a simple, yet dramatic lighting of the window openings, linking the towers together in a common design approach.
