How to clean your house in painstaking detail
1. How to Clean Your House
The âHaving Two Dogsâ Edition
2. The âCleaning Upâ to Clean Up Phase
Get the dogs outside
Dress comfortably with hair tied back or
scarf on and don the rubber gloves.
Choose one room to start with - I choose the
living room first because it takes the most
work.
Pick up everything that is on the floor and
put it away where it should belong
(obviously not heavy items like furniture)
3. Dust all open surfaces - feather dusters reach
cobwebs in high corners. Start from the ceiling
and work down.
Clean all light fittings with a damp sponge - if
they are well encrusted with fly dirt you may
well need to remove the shades and use warm
soapy water to clean.
Roll up the carpets and move all the furniture
into the centre of the room.
The âLighten Up The Placeâ Phase
4. The âHeavy Liftingâ Phase
Roll up the carpets and move all the furniture into the centre of the room.
If the walls are marked, then wash down with a damp sponge. Clean all picture frames
and use window cleaner on the glass or mirrors. Wipe around all light switches.
Vacuum the carpet and/or floors and skirting boards. If you have wooden floors, then
bring out the polisher (unless you are a sucker for punishment then get down on your
knees and apply polish by hand. Sheepskin is good for getting it off.)
5. The âCanât Quit Nowâ Phase
Put the furniture back into place and remove cushions from couches and chairs. Vacuum the
corners of the bases where coins and crumbs could lurk; plump up the cushions and replace.
Use microfibre cloths to clean the TV screen.
Clean windows - best way is to use white spirit vinegar and newspaper.
Wipe all door handles and door if needed.
6. The âSqueaky Cleanâ Phase
The kitchen is next. Make sure all the washing up is done, dried and put away.
Wash down walls and clean light switches.
Clear countertops. Wipe down tops first to remove crumbs with an antibacterial spray.
Clean the small appliances on the counter e.g. kettle, toaster, coffee machine.
Clean the stove with specialised products e.g. if it is stainless steel.
7. The âWork. Work. Work.â Phase
Wipe clean all the cupboard doors and
handles.
Clean and sanitise the sink and taps.
Wipe down all the big appliances i.e. fridge
and freezer.
Empty the bins and sanitise them (outside).
Vacuum the floor.
Clean windows.
8. The âThis is Getting Oldâ Phase
Bathroom is next - pick towels up from
floor where a man has left them.
Clean taps and around plughole. Clean
bath and taps.
Clean shower walls and taps with anti
fungal spray.
Wipe walls and wash floor with a mop.
Clean toilet with a sponge scrub
9. The âSafe Spaceâ Phase
Bedroom is easiest. Pick up all the clothes
left lying around and put them in the wash
basket. Strip the beds and put on clean
linen. Fluff up the pillows and duvet. Dust
the lamps, any picture frames and mirrors.
Polish any wooden furniture and empty
dustbin.
Vacuum carpets.
Clean light switches and wall where needed
with damp cloth.
10. What Youâll Need To Get It All Done
Vacuum cleaner
Microfibre cloths
Plain dusters
Various rags for drying
Feather duster
Bucket
Mop
Floor polisher
Scrubbing sponges
Old tooth brush
Newspaper
Cleaning liquids for stove, sinks, tiles,
