II. PRONUNCIATION: CAN VS. CAN’T
In spoken English, the sound /a/ in can is very short (unstressed);
in contrast, the same sound /a/ in can’t is very long (stressed), and the final –t is not pronounced.
So, to distinguish the difference between can or can’t in spoken English, we have to hear how the
vowel sound is pronounced.
A. Put a check mark (4) on the left of the sentence you hear.
o I can go to the concert. o I can’t go to the concert.
o She can speak Italian. o She can’t speak Italian.

Remember that this kind of questions is the one made with words like:
when (time / date), how (manner), who (person), where (place),
which (when you choose or talk about one person or thing among others),
how often (frequency), how long (duration), what (information about a
specific thing), what time (minute, hour), etc.
• The way you can order the words in a “WH” question is as follows:
Where is your house? The verb “to be” is used as the main verb.
What do you like? If the verb “to be” is not used, then we need
What does she like? the auxiliary do or does.
Note
Notice the following: If you ask a question that needs a “yes or no”
answer, you don’t use a question word (“WH”).
Is this your house? Yes, it is.
Do you live in this house? Yes, I do.
But, when you use a “Wh” question, you will get information, and not
just a yes / no answer.
Where do you live? I live in Durango.
Which one is your house? It’s the red one.

NOTE:
We begin writing informal letters with the date on the top right. Then,
we greet the person, and we start writing as in a conversation. But,
paragraphs and punctuation have to be very well taken care of. Take a
good look at where commas are placed: the date, the greeting, and the
closing. Take another look at where periods are placed: all of them end
a sentence or a combination of sentences that are joined by a
connector.
D. When you join two complete sentences, you have to use a semi-colon (;) or a comma and a connector.
Join the following sentences with punctuation and / or connector. If necessary, use pronouns to
avoid redundancy.
Example:
John likes cars. Mark likes trucks.
John likes cars; Mark likes trucks.
John likes cars, but Mark likes trucks.
Connectors: but (2), and, because, so
