Meaning of Packaging:
It is a process that speaks a company’s ability to contain
economically man-made products for shipment,
storage, sale or final use. It includes the activities of
wrapping or creating the product for performing the
market functions more easily. In other words, the
packaging is the act of housing a product in packages.
It contains in like tins, cans, bags, jars, bottles, boxes,
keys, casts etc.
FUNCTIONS OF PRODUCT
PACKAGING
 PROVIDES PROTECTION TO CONTENT
The basic function of packaging is to protect the particular
content. It protects to a content from damage, dust, dirt,
leakage etc. The contents are fresh, clean and unaffected. So
packaging of a product is helpful to provide the protection to
the particular product or a content.
 ATTRACTIVENESS
Packaging increase the appearance of the product. The
design, color, printing combinations are special means of
attracting customers. The packaging also creates impressions
of richness, luxury, and exclusiveness by using packages.
 CONTAINMENT
Packaging provides space in which the product is contained.
For example, vegetables can be boiled in the bags in which
they are packaged.
 ACTS AS A PROMOTIONAL TOOL
Packaging acts as a ‘silent salesman’. As a promotional
tool, it does self-advertisement, displaying, publishing
and acts as an advertising medium. In other words,
attractive packaging increases the opportunity for
impulse buying.
 COMFORTABLE FOR USER
Easy in storage, transportation, handling and as well as
usage of the product is another requirement. Good
packaging does this in a greater degree.
 EASY PRODUCT-MIX WITH PACKAGING
Product-mix relates to the product-lines an assortment of
sizes, colors, measures, grades etc. Changes in product-mix
can be possible as packaging is to influence weight, size
and as well as dimensions of the product.
 EXTENDS PRODUCT LIFE CYCLE
The package of the product may be useful in an effort to
extend the product life cycle. It is increasingly difficult to
come up with totally new products. But any variety of
packaging innovation can introduce with offer features of a
customer wants.
 EASY HANDLING
Packaged goods are very easy to handle and transport. As
well as the glassware instruments like LCD, TV etc. can
easily handle by mentioning 'HANDLE WITH CARE’.
Furthermore, the packaging is must for several goods like
ghee, butter, acid etc
 PROVIDES PRODUCT DENSITY OR SOLIDITY
It is packaging that increases the product density. In
other words, particular product density implies
selecting such package materials, design, and shape.
That helps to use the limited space in the space in the
best way.
 PRODUCT IDENTIFICATION
Another key point is the product identification.
Product differentiation is the hallmark of these days of
keen competition. It is further by effective product
branding and packaging. In other words, the package
is the product’s personality.
