1 Course title and credit points
The course is titled Language and Communication
I/Språk och Kommunikation I and awards 15 ECTS

2 Decision and approval
This course is established by School of
Technoculture, Humanities and Planning
2007-02-28. The course syllabus is approved by
School of Technoculture, Humanities and Planning
and applies from 2007-07-01.
3 Objectives
The goals of the course are to increase students’
ability to understand and use the English language
in speech and writing with emphasis on rhetorical
and grammatical correctness. Through formal and
informal writing assignments and oral presentation,
students are trained in composition principles and
English grammar.
4 Content
In the course students study critical essays and
scholarly publications and learn to identify
arguments, summarize information, and recognize
rhetorical principles that demonstrate effective
communication. Students analyze components of
traditional academic essay composition, including
thesis statements, topic sentences, clear paragraphs,
and learn fundamentals of prose style. Students also
produce their own oral and written texts using the
principles explored in class. Students are also
trained in grammar through workshops and tutorial
sessions and introduced to basic software
applications necessary to producing texts in
traditional and digital formats (MS Office, and
Macromedia Dreamweaver, for example).
5 Aims and learning outcomes

On completion of the course students will be able to:
• demonstrate their understanding of effective
academic writing by producing coherent critical
essays
• Identify and evaluate critical arguments
• Formulate clear paragraphs with recognizable
topic sentences
• demonstrate grammatical correctness in their own
writing
• demonstrate effective oral presentation skills
• demonstrate basic proficiency in using the MS
Office suite and Macromedia Dreamweaver.
6 Generic skills
The following generic skills are trained in the
course:
• Computer literacy
7 Learning and teaching
The teaching comprises lectures, group assignments
and project work. Teaching consists of lectures,
seminars, peer-group sessions and workshops.
Lectures and seminars introduce students to rules of
composition and grammar, while peer group
sessions provide opportunities to work on
assignments and texts.
Individual assignments will give opportunity for
reflection. The course also includes MS Office and
Dreamweaver labs and examination,
Program students will integrate assignments into
their digital portfolio which is developed
throughout the program.
The course is taught in English.
The teaching language is English.

The course coordinator is responsible for
systematically gathering feedback from the students
in course evaluations and making sure that the
results of these feed back into the development of
the course.

The special prerequisites for this course, besides
basic eligibility for university studies, are a pass
mark from the following upper secondary school
courses: English B.
11 Field of education and subject area
The course is part of the field of education and is
included in the subject area english.
12 Restrictions regarding degree
The course cannot form part of a degree with
another course, the content of which completely or
partly corresponds with the contents of this course.

A compendia of critical articles may be provided by
the instructor
Print and online resources for grammar will be

projects.
