7. FASHION – How it happened?
• McCartney’s advent with fashion happened at a very young age.
• As told to a Vogue – McCartney’s says ‘I always knew I wanted to be a fashion designer.’
• At the age of 13, she designed her first jacket. Three years later, at 16, she interned for Christian Lacroix.
• Her first haute couture collection was when she was an apprentice for Edward Sexton, her father’s Savile Row
(home to numerous traditional and highly respected custom clothing companies) tailor for a number of years.
• She also briefly worked at the French company Patou, makers of expensive custom-made clothes but left the
company in objection to their use of fur in some of their products.
• Her graduation collection was modelled by the likes of Naomi Campbell, Yasmin Le Bon and Kate Moss for
free at her graduation runway show.
• Prior to this her designs were bought by upscale departmental stores like Brows, Joseph, Bergdorf Goodman
and Neiman Marcus.
11. Her TRADEMARKS
• She is a staunch vegetarian and thus, never uses leather or fur in any of her
products. Although, the use of wool, silk and other animal – derived fabrics
can be seen in her work.
• She is renowned for her sharp, clean and crisp tailoring that has a feminine edge
and also considerate approach to wearable clothing. Moreover, she has
remarkable knowledge on quality clothing and marketing strategies.
• Her designs features a mix of crisp tailoring with lacy, romantic pieces, a
combination that conveys a sense of strong femininity. Her specialties are slip
dresses and luxurious swishy silk skirts.
• Her specialty are mostly women’s wear although she has even designed kids wear,
bags, accessories, skin care and men’s wear.
12. • All of her products reflect McCartney's dedication to animal rights and other causes.
In her clothing designs she emphasizes cottons and silks.
• Besides these, McCartney also introduced her own line of perfume called “Stella.”
The company manufacturing her fragrance is prohibited from using genetically
modified materials, i.e., plants that have been altered by humans as well as plants that
were harvested by children or that are on any endangered species list. McCartney
attributes her socially conscious attitude to the earthy styles of her parents,
particularly her late mother.
• She has also credited her mother with informing her fashion sensibility: the
confidence to wear clothes she loves rather than following trends, a combination of
vintage and modern looks, and the choice of a natural look over a highly polished one.
17. Position & Contributions To The Industry
• McCartney has earned herself various laurels as well as critics. Her critics mostly
attributing her fame to her last name. Although, this has never wavered her ways.
Ups- Her contribution to the industry has been really tremendous, from reviving the
struggling company of Chloe as its Creative Director to striking an equal partnership
deal along with a no leather/ fur policy with the famous luxury and leather brand
Gucci Groups (now Kering) and establishing her own fashion house.
Downs- Just a few months after establishing her own brand in the fall of 2001, she showed her
first collection.
The reception was not exactly favorable she deviated from her signature style with
lovely, easy on the eye garments to something more hardcore. Fashion journalists
wrote harsh reviews on the show, with reiterating their opinion that the designer was
famous simply because of her name.
18. In the game, again!- However, McCartney once again proved her critics wrong as she
returned to her roots, focusing on designing clothes that made women
feel and look good. In the fall of 2002 she opened her first store, in
New York City, the second at London, the third in L.A and now all over
the globe.
• Stella McCartney proves to be an inspiration to the women in her industry as well as
across to never compromise with their beliefs and principles ( as in the case of Gucci).
19. Impact On The World Of Fashion
• McCartney believes in Sustainable fashion.
• She is a lifelong vegetarian and an animal activist.
• A supporter of ‘PETA,’ some of her designs contain text that elaborates on her ‘no animal
policy,’ like that jacket for Adidas she designed, read “suitable for sporty vegetarian” on
