Senior Vessel Traffic Officer
My In the role of Vessel Traffic Service Operator I was a key member of a team which
provides a monitoring and information of service to vessels with in in the national port
authority. My task was to deliver Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) to ensure the safe, efficient
and compliant movement of vessels and the protection of the environment in the ports of
South Africa. My role gave me the responsibility of delegating as required by the Regional
Harbour Master to ensure the safe andefficient management of shipping as detailedinthe
relevant manuals and operating procedures.
My role & responsibilities involved the delivery of the prescribed VTS and Coastal Radio
Communications Service for the designated areas in accordance with regulations,
procedures, instructions and delegations. Delivery of communications, coordination and
alerting service, including inresponse to marine incidents, relatedemergencies andnatural
disasters for the designatedareas in accordance with regulations, procedures, instructions
and delegations. I had to apply port procedures to vessels in order to effectively and
efficiently schedule ship movements and also implement safe vessel movements.
To monitor & facilitate efficient & safe traffic movement throughthe Vessel Traffic System
in accordance with the marine traffic regulating act inprevention of collisions, grounding,
maritime casualties andensuring there is no environmental damage.
My duties include effective planning & allocationof tugs, pilots and helicopters, the
accurate recoding & retrieval of ETA’s, berth planning.
Constant liaisonwithterminal companies, w.r.t: berth, bollards & scheduling and NSRI
to inform SAMSA of all issues relatedtosafetyof vessels & effects onport operations

I utilize the marine radar, VHF radio to communicate with the pilots, tugs & helicopters, I
also use nautical charts to record a vessels position and plot courses and forecast marine
traffic flow.
As a VTS operator I am required to communicate with various people including the ship’s
master, port/terminal operators, Maritime Coastguard Agency, shipping agents, weather
forecasters and, when required, the emergency services. They would receive information
from the vessel regarding its intended movements and also provide information about
weather and tidal conditions, the movement of other vessels in the area and berthing
instructions.
I am positionedat the port control center whichis the hub of communicationfor anyexisting
or potential emergency situation. I am required to implement contingency plans and help
to co-ordinate activity with the relevant parties

Relevant working experience and skills
As a Marine Vessel Traffic Controller I am based at a Control Tower and my tasks include controlling the arrival and departure of in
& outbound vessels, making related data entries and submitting daily statements, I also receive and transmit signals to and from any
vessel with in the port. My duty is to keep both a visual watch and electronic navigational aid with in the harbor and alert concerned
officers in case of emergencies or sudden change, my other responsibilities includeduties that are assigned by my superior,
preparing vessel programs and priority planning is essential, coordinating with container& general cargo terminals for efficient and
smooth port operations. Preparing vessel reports, update web portal and vessel movement forecasts, my main objective and aim is
to ensure awareness to all necessary parties of vessel traffic; this is done via radio and telecom. I also liaise with crew, pilot
helicopters & pilots with regards to preparing and advising of their movements, and with addition I assist the Captain in
administration work and logistics planning. I am a methodical and planned individual who is willing to adapt to any sort of job and
function. I speak very fluent English, I am well-groomed and well mannered. I consider myself a hard working individual who is
always gladly willing to take on any challenge ahead on me. No task is too much too handle, I also have great professionalism when
