13. OPPORTUNITIES
Opportunity to train in Dublin after she joined
‘Sisters of Loreto’
To teach at St. Mary's High School in Calcutta, from
1931 to 1948
She was joined by voluntary helpers, and financial
support was also forthcoming
Theresa received Vatican permission on 7 October
1950 to start the diocesan congregation that would
become the Missionaries of Charity
With the help of Indian officials she converted an
abandoned Hindu temple into the Kalighat home for
the dying, a free hospice for the poor
14. THREATS
Had no income and had to resort to begging for food
and supplies
Experienced doubt and loneliness
The temptation to return to the comfort of convent
life during her early career
She suffered a heart attack in Rome in 1983, while
visiting Pope John Paul
After a second attack in 1989, she received an
artificial pacemaker
Broke her collar bone and suffered from malaria also
for a long time

Helped the poor destitute, sick, orphaned, and dying
children and people
Taught at St. Mary’s High School, Calcutta from 1931
to 1948
Started an open-air school for slum children in
Calcutta
Opened the first AIDS clinic in the United States
Ran orphanages and places for old crippled people
who were the "unwanted" of society
18. ACHIEVEMENTS
Started Missionaries of Charity in 1950
In 1962 won the Pandra Shri prize for "extraordinary
services."
Received the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize in 1971
In 1979 received the Nobel Peace Prize
Received an award called the John F. Kennedy
International Award
Received the Templeton Award for progress in
religion
Also received the Jawaharlal Nehru Award
Won about 126 awards in her lifetime
