The document summarizes the use of various digital technologies in planning, researching, constructing, and promoting a music video project. Technologies used included:
- Blogger, YouTube, SlideShare, Google Docs, Vimeo, Prezi, SurveyMonkey for research and planning
- IMovie and iTunes for editing, sound editing, and obtaining rights to use a song
- Websites like Wix to create a website marketing and promoting the music video
- Paint and PowerPoint for editing photos and assembling a digital packaging (digipak) mock-up
The document emphasizes how these technologies were essential at every stage for professional and high-quality results that met genre and project conventions.

3. Research and Planning
In the research and planning stage of my opening, I used technology to influence my planning
and research for the project. A lot of research using the internet was very important and
necessary to show I have shown development and also an understanding of media products.
Using previous students approaches to tackling research and researching real film examples
helped me to plan effectively so I can consider the important factors that will aid me in
putting together a music video. This project required me to detail my progress throughout
the planning stage and reference other forms of media and how they have influenced my
project.
Using the internet was my main source of technology for the research an planning for my
opening. However I did use primary research such as questionnaires and focus groups which
allowed me to gain an understanding on demographics and target market which are very
important in establishing a target market as well as how to market towards my chosen
demographic. It was important to use a wide range of sources when doing the research and
planning as this demonstrated the use of different mediums and also make the blog more
interactive as well as interesting for the audience so they don’t just see big columns of text
and pictures.
Some examples of websites that I used were: Vimeo, Prezi, SlideShare, YouTube Survey
Monkey and Google Docs which allowed me to present my research and planning in different
formats to show my ability to use different forms of media to make my blog more interactive.
Without demonstrating my understanding of research and planning, it would show that I
have not considered why I chose to make my opening in the way that I did and will show that
I didn’t plan my video which will show a lack of research which would make me loose a lot of
marks, Therefore to make my music video look as professional as possible, I planned the
whole process and documented it to show my progress throughout the unit an my thought
processes behind my inspiration and influences.
4. Construction of Video
The construction of my music video was very important because I had to make sure that all
the shots followed all the conventions of the chosen genre and that the editing was perfect
so that the backing track, the characters and sound effects are all properly synched. I started
off using YouTube to look up examples of music videos so I can take inspiration from them
and use techniques shown in these music videos to impact the planning process of my video.
As explained in the 2nd evaluation question, there are screenshots of music videos and
screenshots of shots from my music video and an explanation on how they are linked. This
was to show how I have researched music videos and have taken inspiration from them so
that it can benefit my music video.
To produce my music video, I used IMovie on an iMac so that I could edit my music video.
IMovie allowed me to upload all of my footage and edit the footage. The programme allowed
me to cut and crop clips as well as change the speed, sound and lighting of the shots to make
my video look more professional. IMovie also has a wide variety of sound effects that I
browsed to see if any of them would aid my music video.
I then used ITunes to buy the backing tracks so I had the rights to use the song for my music
video. This was very important because I needed the backing track to produce my music
video so by buying the song from ITunes allowed me to gain the rights to produce a music
video over the song Paint it Black. Without using media technologies, I wouldn't of been able
to research previous examples for inspiration which would have made it harder to produce a
music video as finding inspiration gives fresh ideas that will help make the music video more
professional as well as demonstrate the ability to plan and research. All the filming was done
on an IPhone 7 which has stabilising technology which made the filming more smooth and
less ‘jumpy’ which allowed the music video to look more professional as the camera work is a
lot smoother.
5. Post-Production
Post-production refers to the editing and construction done. All of my editing was done on
IMovie because this was a free service that allowed me to cut, crop, colour adjust, use
transitions and change speed to make sure that all the shots were in perfect synch with the
backing track. I also used iTunes to download the backing track for my music video. Using
these two digital technologies were vital in the post-production stage of the music video as
they helped me to edit the shots and the music together to make sure they were in synch. This
was very important because I couldn’t have made a professional music video without synching
the audio and the footage together because it would firstly look unrealistic and secondly
would have showed little editing skills which would make me loose a lot of marks.
I watched the video numerous times with friends to see if there were any shots we felt
needed editing. There was a shot that broke the 180 degree rule which I had to change
because otherwise this would have confused the audience. The post-production process took
up a lot of time because I had to make sure everything was synched together because it was
vital in making sure the video looked professional and demonstrated a strong use of editing
techniques using digital technology. Without using IMovie and ITunes, I wouldn’t of been able
to produce a high-quality music video and would have a lot of marks as I needed these digital
technologies to edit my music video.
These two digital technologies were used throughout the post-production process as they
were the only technology I used to edit my music video which shows their importance and
significance to my post-production process.
6. Ancillary tasks- Website
The website was designed and created over Wix. Wix is a free website where
people can produce and publish their own websites to advertise or inform people.
My website on Wix was used to inform people about my upcoming music video
and to give them news on the planning and production music video. Using this
website was vital because this digital technology allowed me to market my video to
my target audience. This website allowed me to add pictures, text and change
designs so I could appeal my website to my chosen target audience. The website
allowed me to put all of my marketing in one place so that my audience can
consume all the information they need on the updates of my music video progress.
The website features all photos of the band as well as an about and contact section
where the audience can contact me on any changes or improvements they feel
need to be made on my website. This website was the most important digital
technology as this was the basis of my website because all of the editing for the
website was done over Wix.
7. Ancillary tasks- Digipak
The digipak was mostly completed on paint and PowerPoint. Paint was used to
crop and edit photos to be used for my digipak. PowerPoint was used to put all of
the slides over the top of the template. I had a template for all of the panels to
go over so that I can make the digipak look realistic. Without the use of these
digital technologies, I wouldn’t have been able to produce a 6-panel digipak
because I needed to crop, edit and put titles over the panels so it can be a
professional digipak that follows the conventions of a digipak.
I made multiple versions on Microsoft PowerPoint where I trialled different
design ideas and also where I put the text over the digipak slides and adjusted
the colour and sizing of the images. Without trialling different ideas, I wouldn’t
have been able to come up with a suitable format for my slides. The planning of
my digipak is very important because the design will affect the professionality of
the panels. Therefore, I trialled multiple different designs and got audience
feedback on my slide ideas to find the most suitable and professional looking
format I could. Using Paint and PowerPoint allowed me to edit the panels
effectively so that I could fit all my slides into the template as putting all the
panels on the template I found online will make my digipak look more realistic as
putting the panels on the template shows I considered the size and the format of
a real life example.
