This document provides an overview of the basics of DSLR photography. It explains that a DSLR uses a mirror inside the camera body to reflect light from the lens up into an optical viewfinder. 2. What is a DSLR?
• In the most literal sense, a DSLR camera is a digital single-lens
reflex camera.
• Inside the camera body is a mirror that reflects the light coming from
the lens up into an optical viewfinder, by way of either a prism (in
higher-end DSLRs) or a series of additional mirrors (usually in lower-
end models).

4. Shutter Speed
• Shutter speed is the length of time your camera shutter is open,
exposing light onto the camera sensor.
• Essentially, it’s how long your camera spends taking a photo. This has
a few important effects in how your images will appear.
• Shutter speeds varies from 30 seconds to 1/3200th second depending
on the camera.

1/500th of a second is the fastest and captures objects in moving,
sharply!
While 1/2nd of a second lets more light in and is useful in
photographing a low light non moving object

6. ISO
• ISO is simply a camera setting that will brighten or darken a photo.
• As you increase your ISO number, your photos will grow progressively
brighter.
• ISO is a good tool to help you capture images in dark environments or
be more flexible about your aperture and shutter speed settings.
• A photo taken at too high of an ISO will show a lot of grain, also
known as noise, and might not be usable.

8. Aperture
• Aperture is a hole within a lens, through which light travels into the
camera body.
• A basic 18-55mm lens will have f3.5 to f5.6
• F3.5 means the lens is relatively closed and lets in lesser amount of
light when compared to F5.6
• A smaller F number will help achieve depth of field and blurs the
background
