2. What is mental health?
Mental health is a term that refers to a person's psychological and emotional well-
being. Individual behavior, such as how he interacts with his family and friends,
can be used to determine mental health. Mental health can be either good or bad.
No one, young or old, can claim to be unaffected by mental illness( Bergunj Public
College, 2018)
Mental health can alternatively be defined as a condition of well-being in which a
person recognizes his or her own potential, is able to cope with typical life
challenges, is able to work productively, and is able to contribute to his or her
community.

4. Factors affecting Mental Health
Confidence
Physical Health/illness
Abuse ( In child)
Relationship
Biological Factor (gens)
Life experience
Death
Lack of direction(Jayaramachandran, 2020)
5. Global Burden
According to Jayaramachandran(2020), the global estimates of the major mental
disorders are as follows::
• Depression – 300 million
• Bipolar affective disorders – 60 million
• Schizophrenia & other psychosis – 23 million
• Dementia – 50 million
These estimates show how mental health is affecting humanity globally and the sad
part is that most of us we tend to ignore it and if it is something that does not exist.
Looking at the figures above, its quite shocking how much effect it has.
6. Characteristics of a mentally healthy
person
He is at ease in his own skin, secure and adequate. He recognizes and accepts his flaws.
He is self-assured.
A mentally healthy individual has a positive attitude toward others and loves them. He
has pleasant and long-lasting friendships, and he likes and trusts others. He is
concerned about his neighbors and fellow citizens.
A mentally healthy person is capable of meeting life's challenges.
He takes action as soon as an issue arises.
He is capable of independent thought and decision-making.
He sets realistic objectives for him.
He manages his day-to-day tasks.
He is not overwhelmed by his own fears, rage, love, or guilt.
7. Warning Signals of Poor Mental Health
Do you have a habit of worrying?
Are you having trouble concentrating for unknown reasons?
Are you constantly dissatisfied for no apparent reason?
Do you lose your cool easily and frequently?
Do you suffer from insomnia on a regular basis?
Do you suffer from mood swings that range from depression to euphoria and back to
depression, rendering you unable to function?
Do you find it difficult to be around other people?
Are you irritated if your daily routine is disrupted? (Bergunj Public College, 2018)
8. Mental health refers to our ability to feel, think, and act in ways that
improve our ability to enjoy life while also dealing with the obstacles we
confront. It is a positive emotional and spiritual sense of well-being that
values culture, equity, social justice, linkages, and personal
dignity(Rahman, 2020).
9. When the person
has these
symptoms listed
above we say that
they have a mental
illness
Therefore the person will
have to go to mental clinics
or hospitals that are put into
place to help people as a
mental illness can hinder an
individual into functioning
into their full potential just
like a mentally healthy
person.
10. The need for Mental Clinics
Access to mental health clinics and services is critical. Patients and their families
will be more vulnerable to chronic disorders such as stress, anxiety, depression,
and even substance misuse if mental health clinics are not available in our
communities. These dangers are reduced in mental health clinics.
They provide guidance to individuals and their families on how to deal with
mental illness and trauma. They give the community the assurance that if they are
feeling vulnerable, aid and support is accessible and that they know where to look
for it( Dubai, 2021)
11. That is why we need to raise awareness and
inform our communities about this reality
12. Way to Maintain Positive Mental Health
Make friends with others.
Maintain an optimistic attitude.
Engage in physical exercise.
Assist others
Get enough rest.
Assemble a good group of people around you.
Set a reasonable aim.
13. Ways You Can Raise Community Awareness
1. Make a list of everyone you know. Inquire about the well-being of family, friends, and
coworkers, and pay attention to the responses. Let them know that there are options
available to aid them if they show signs of being depressed or anxious. - If you suspect
they're thinking about self-harm or suicide, encourage them to get care right away and
offer assistance as needed.
2. Describe your experience in detail.Share your story if you've dealt with or are dealing
with mental illness. It can be reassuring to know that you are not alone in your
struggles. It could be the push someone needs to seek help and seek therapy.
3. Encourage the use of positive language. When individuals around you use derogatory
language to describe mental illness, kindly remind them to consider the impact of their
words. Any language that fosters the stigma associated with mental illness is
detrimental and may prevent someone from seeking treatment. Explore the value of
knowing yourself, which respects the customer by distinguishing symptoms from the
person using intelligent language(Kalia, 2019)
14. 4. Become knowledgeable about mental disease. Mental illness is frequently
misunderstood by the general public. Learn more about it and then share what you've
learned with others. This involves having age-appropriate conversations with children
about mental health. Mental disease does not discriminate between children and adults,
and illnesses such as sadness and anxiety can strike as early as elementary school.
5. Arrange for a mental health screening. Promoting an event or requesting that a
community health fair include a mental health screening can motivate people to take
action to improve their mental health.
6. Become a volunteer. Community Reach Center, a mental health organization,
frequently need assistance with unique initiatives and ongoing work. Your phone call or
email will be received with sincere gratitude.
7.Take advantage of social media. Platforms like Facebook and Twitter can serve as
excellent platforms for encouraging people to be open-minded and curious about mental
illness.
8. Encourage physical activity that aids mental well-being. Assist people in realizing that
their physical health has a direct impact on their mental wellbeing. Healthy eating,
exercise, and sleep all contribute to a person's mental and emotional well-being.
