• At Ditton Park Academy you have the option to
pursue the Fine Art GCSE or the Art, Craft and
Design GCSE.
• There are key similarities to the courses:
• Both comprise of –
• 60% - Non Exam Assessment ( Coursework)
• 40% - Exam Unit
• Within both options year 9 and 10 is spent
learning lots of new techniques. Students
specialise in year 11.
ART, CRAFT
and DESIGN
• Students must explore and create work associated with areas of study from at least two titles
listed below.
• Fine art: for example drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, lens-/light-based media,
photography and the moving image, printmaking, mixed media and land art.
• Graphic communication: for example communication graphics, design for print, advertising
and branding, illustration, package design, typography, interactive design, (including web, app
and game), multi-media, motion graphics, signage and exhibition graphics.
• Textile design: for example art textiles, fashion design and illustration, costume design,
constructed textiles, printed and dyed textiles, surface pattern, stitched and/or embellished
textiles, soft furnishings and/or textiles for interiors, digital textiles and installed textiles.
• Three-dimensional design: for example architectural design, sculpture, ceramics, product
design, jewellery and body adornment, interior design, environmental/landscape/garden
design, exhibition design, three-dimensional digital design and designs for theatre, film and
television.
• Photography: for example portraiture, location photography, studio photography, experimental
imagery, installation, documentary photography, photo-journalism, moving image: film, video
and animation, fashion photography.
• This course is an ideal option for students who like the making side of Art and
Design. Year 9 and 10 will be spent learning new techniques including
Drawing Skills, Photo editing , Adobe Illustrator and 3d work. In year 11 they
select an area to specialise in. We have had students specialise in Graphic
Design, Costume Design, Screen – printing and 3d Work.
FINE ART
• With the Fine Art option students focus on learning a wide range of Art making techniques;
• drawing
• painting
• sculpture
• installation
• lens-/light-based media
• photography and the moving image
• printmaking
• mixed media
• land art.
• They may explore overlapping areas and combinations of areas
• In year 11 students select their own theme and techniques to make a personal Investigation.
• Eg – Portraits as a theme with painting as a technique
• Cars as a theme with screen printing as a technique.
Art based study can be defined as practice that
involves the development of personal work and lines
of enquiry determined by the need to explore an
idea, convey an experience or respond to a theme
or issue.
Craft based study can be defined as practice that
involves making activities that draw upon knowledge
of tools, materials and processes, and associated
intellectual, creative and practical skills.
Design based study can be defined as practice that
involves developing a response to a specific need,
brief or starting point, taking account of established
requirements, constraints and/or parameters.
