Charity’s millionth
meal food for thought
NEARLY 50 charities receive food
packages from UnitingCare West
each week.
Food Rescue was established
by UnitingCare West in October
2010 and serviced just five chari-
ties. It has saved more than
500,000kg of food from going to
waste by distributing it to those in
need.
UnitingCare West chief execu-
tive Sue Ash said Food Rescue fed
5500 people a week in Perth. It de-
livered a milestone one millionth
meal to the Esther Foundation in
South Perth this month.
“The millionth meal was deliv-
ered three months ahead of sched-
ule thanks to a three-year spon-
sorship from Alinta Energy,” Ms
Ash said.
“Funding from Alinta Energy
has enabled Food Rescue to add
nine charities to its service portfo-
lio and an additional 80,300 spon-
sored meals a year.”
The Esther Foundation oper-
ates 13 residential premises hous-
ing more than 45 young mothers,
young women and children, help-
ing them overcome life control-
ling struggles and issues in a safe,
