CV Tips
Writing your CV
No matter what you write or how you lay out your CV make sure you do one thing – use spell check! This
may seem obvious but bad spelling and grammar does not give a good impression to potential employers
and you may miss out on that perfect role. Having said this, don’t rely on it too heavily as it won’t always
give you the correct alternative (for example, ‘organisation’ often becomes the American version
‘organization’). Try getting someone else to read it over before you send it out – a fresh pair of eyes will
pick up mistakes more easily than someone who has read it ten times over.
What to include
Whilst the final layout of CVs can vary, it is important to always include certain information:
Contact Details
Ensure potential employers have a way of getting in contact and make it easy for them. Make sure they have your phone number, email address
and home address. If you have one, you may also choose to include a link to your LinkedIn profile.
Career Experience
Employers need to know what experience you have that is relevant to their field and why you would be suitable for their role. Include dates of
employment and a brief description of your responsibilities to show them what you can do. If you have any achievements that you wish to
share you may want to include them here or in their own section.
Qualifications & Training
Some roles require certain qualifications so it is essential that you include these if they are relevant. If it is not there, they will not know.
Interests
Show them who you are and that you have a life outside of work. Include things you are passionate about so you have something else to talk
about in your interview.
Putting it all together
The order of your CV is less important, as long as it still makes sense and the most important
information easy to find.
There is a misconception that a CV should be no more than 2 pages. Use as many pages as you need,
just be careful not to turn it into an essay. Make sure it is easy to navigate and only says what it
needs to – don’t write 10 words if you can say it in 5.
Finally, make sure that what you write is a true representation of yourself and that it shows the very
best that you can offer.

Interview Tips
What to take with you
Well done on getting this far! The next step is to make sure you are prepared for your interview. First things first,
make sure you have all the details for your interview with you - who you are meeting, where you are meeting them
and at what time.
Some companies may ask you to provide more information so it is a good idea to take your passport / working visa
and driving licence with you. You should also take a copy of your CV; there are two reasons for this – firstly, you
may be asked to fill out a form that requires some information outlined on your CV and it is always good to cross
reference to make sure it all matches up. Secondly, accidents happen and things get mislaid. Should your
interviewer happen to have mislaid your CV, you would be able to provide a replacement.
If you already have reference letters, you may wish to take these along for discussion or to leave behind. If you
don’t have any, you should at least have the names and contact details of your referees ready should you need
them.
Common interview questions you will be asked
The interview is an opportunity for both the company and you to evaluate whether you are a good fit for the job
so expect questions relating to your ability, work history, future goals and whether you fit the company culture.
Prepare for the type of questions you are likely to be asked. It is likely that your interviewer will
explore whether or not you have the skills and experience to succeed in the role, so make sure you can answer
questions relating to the job specifics. The job description and advertisement are good tools to use in working out
what they are likely to ask you regarding your professional abilities.
You will probably also be asked some general questions, so they can find out more about you, your future plans
and so on. Expect questions like 'Tell me about yourself' (an opportunity to present your particular strengths and
fit for the job), 'What are your weaknesses?' (an opportunity to show how you have learned useful lessons) or
'Where do you want to be in the next X years?' (allows you to show ambition and company loyalty).
Good preparation is essential, so spend time before the interview reviewing your CV to make sure you can connect
your background (your skills, accomplishments and learning curves) to the job and company requirements. You may also need to
explain gaps on your CV or the reasons why you left a company.
Below are common, general questions you should prepare to answer:
Tell me about yourself
This, or any of the alternative introductory questions ('What sets you apart from other candidates?' or 'Why should we hire you?')
is an ideal opportunity for you to talk about how you're a good fit for the job. You can almost guarantee you will get a question
like this so prepare an answer but be careful not to sound too rehearsed. Concentrate on how your experience, successes or
personal characteristics make you a strong candidate and avoid irrelevant information. Aim to talk for a minute or so then check
with the interviewer that s/he has enough information. Don't describe yourself using clichés like 'I'm a team-player', but
demonstrate through examples how you match the job description or ideal candidate profile.
What are your strengths/weaknesses?
Expect a question relating to your personal characteristics. Alternatives could be 'How would you describe your personality?' or 'How do
your employees/managers perceive you?‘. Choose the most relevant strengths to the job you're applying for. When answering the
'weakness' question, avoid clichés like 'I work too hard/I'm a perfectionist'. Instead, choose a real area where you're aware you could do
better, and say what you're doing about it. For example, 'I tend to clam up in meetings, but if I go in with prepared points, I find I can
contribute much more effectively.‘
Where would you like to be in the next three/five years?
This is a good opportunity to talk about your career goals and link them to what the company offers in terms of promotion and career
development.
What did you like the most/least about your last job?
Knowing what the role involves is important as it will help you frame your answer. Saying you disliked working for a disorganised
manager will be counterproductive if you're interviewing for a similar position. Try to emphasise the positives. For example, 'I enjoyed
being able to help my manager be more efficient by organising his diary and correspondence' would be more appropriate in this instance.
Although you need to show self-awareness of what you really dislike, it's not an invitation to criticise your previous company. A safe
approach is to stick to generalities: 'I like working with supportive colleagues/in companies which promote openness and transparency'
or 'I dislike office politics'.
Questions you could ask the interviewer(s)
You should always be prepared to ask your interviewer some questions. Done correctly, it will show them you have an
interest in the company and the position. Before you pick and choose from the following top questions, be sure to consider
the culture of the organisation and the interviewer doing the selecting. Adopt the right tone and convey a positive attitude –
you want to ensure this opportunity to ask questions works for you, not against you.
What are the most enjoyable and the least enjoyable aspects of the role?
This can show that you like to know what sort of challenge you are going to face and that you like to get properly prepared
for it, all in the expectation of being able to rise to it.
You mentioned there will be a lot of commercial aspects to this role; what do your most successful people
find satisfying about this part of the role?
This question can serve two purposes; it demonstrates your listening skills and associates you with being successful in the
role and finding it satisfying.
Is there scope for promotion in the future?
This is another classic question. In a similar vein, it emphasises a determination to make progress and over the long term.
Can you tell me how the role relates to the overall structure of the organisation?
With this question you're drawing attention to a preference for teamwork. It looks as though you want to know where you would fit in
and how your contribution would affect the rest of the company.
How would you describe the work culture here?
This signals that you want to operate at your optimum and understand that for this you require a positive environment. This indicates
you're a good self-manager who is aware of how to get the best out of yourself.
In what way is performance measured and reviewed?
This question flags up that you appreciate the importance of delivering real results. You will be seen as someone who understands the
value of commitment, reliability and returns.
What are the most important issues that you think your organisation will face? / You have recently
introduced a new product/service/division/project; how will this benefit the organisation?
These variations both show that you are interested in the job and the employer. It will be apparent you have done some
research, done some thinking, and are now eager to hear their analysis.
Do you have any doubts about whether I am suited to this position?
This is a more brazen way of emphasising some of your strengths. It suggests you are open to constructive criticism and willing
to learn from the experience of others. It also gives you a real chance to address any weaknesses the interviewer may think
you have. Finally, it allows you to finish on a high, re-stating why you think you are the right person.
Other Tips
Prepare yourself - know your CV; this may seem obvious but when you are nervous and concentrating on impressing the
interviewer you can often forget the key points on your CV. The more you have gone through your achievements and work
experience the better you will be able to communicate these.
Try and relax - this will allow you to be more natural and you will smile and engage better with the interviewer.
Mirror the style of the interviewer - this will allow you to build rapport more easily and will lead again to a more natural
conversation where you are likely to perform and communicate with a higher degree of ease.
