Relationships are one of the most important things in our lives. Ultimately for each person to become a better individual the quality of the relationships they share will have a significant impact.
3. Relationships Matter
It is impossible for one to exist without a relationship.
Some examples are:
◦ Creator and Creature
◦ Employer and Employee
◦ Parent and child
◦ Teacher and Student
The level of commitment to the relationship will
ultimately determine the quality of the relationship
The quality of the interaction between the parties will
affect the growth of the relationship
4. Quality vs. Quantity
Quality is a measure of excellence
Quantity is the amount of a thing
The worth or value of a relationship should never be defined by
the quantity of time the parties spend together but rather the
quality of the quantity of time.
A meaningful relationship is one that grows as time goes.
Don’t just count the years; add value to the years
5. Add Value
You can add value to your relationships by being
the person you’d like the other person to be:
◦ If you want someone that is honest; be honest
◦ If you want someone that is dedicated; be
dedicated
◦ If you want loyalty; be loyal
To add value you need to be in the know
◦ Know the other party’s likes and share in or initiate
them
◦ Know the other party’s fears and assist with
overcoming them
◦ Know the other party’s shortcomings and help to
strengthen them
6. Reciprocate
Relationships are about selflessness not selfishness
Give that which you would like to receive
Share the spotlight
◦ ‘Big up’ and you’ll get your ‘big up’ in other words if
one party does something that is worthy of
recognition or praise then acknowledge it.
Love requires love as its recompense/reward
◦ If you find yourself in a rut in your relationship; love
your way out of it
Be ready to forgive because someday you’ll need
forgiveness
7. Discuss don’t Discard
Be open with/about how you’re feeling towards the
other party
Sometimes it isn’t about how it is said or what was
said but how what was said made you feel
◦ Never forget that the other party to the relationship is a
human being and should be treated as such
There is never an appropriate time to raise your voice
or show your authority in a relationship
◦ Each party is intellectually capable to have a discussion
just ensure that you choose an appropriate time
8. Bond
Spending time together is the best glue that can hold
a relationship together
Always seize opportunities to share activities
Pleasantly surprise the other party in the relationship
Remember and celebrate milestones
Be careful of frequent activities that keep both
parties apart
Make being in each other’s company fun,
entertaining and meaningful
